Animate Old Photos with AI: Restore and Bring Old Family Photos to Life

VdoBloom Revive Old Photos is an AI tool that animates old photos. It first repairs the picture (scratches, dust, tears, creases and faded color), then brings it to life as a short video with gentle, natural motion such as a soft smile, a blink or a slight turn of the head. You upload one photo, pick how it should come to life, and get a 5, 8 or 10 second clip a few minutes later.

Is it free? Not entirely. New accounts get 10 free credits, but the lowest-priced revival costs 24 credits (Seedance 2 Fast, 5 seconds, 480p, restore off), so you need a credit pack to make a video. The default setup (restore on, Seedance 2, 5 seconds, 720p) costs 89 credits. The Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, and pack credits never expire. If a revival fails, the whole charge is refunded.

It is built for family memories: a grandparent’s portrait, an old wedding photo, the only picture you have of someone. Restoration keeps every face, the composition and the original era, and the motion stays gentle on purpose. Every revived photo stays private to your account.

How it works

  1. 1

    Confirm the family-photo consent

Tick the box confirming this is your own family photo. For a childhood photo, you confirm that you are the person in it, or their parent or legal guardian.

  2. 2

    Upload the old photo

A scan or a phone photo of the print. Black and white, sepia, faded, scratched or creased photos all work.

  3. 3

Keep "Restore first" on (or turn it off)

Restore repairs damage and recovers color before animating, for 7 extra credits. Turn it off if your photo is already clean.

  4. 4

    Pick a motion style

Gentle Memory, Warm Smile, Coming Alive, or Family Moment for group photos.

  5. 5

Choose model, length, resolution and shape

    Seedance 2 or Seedance 2 Fast; 5, 8 or 10 seconds; 480p to 1080p; the photo’s own shape or 9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 3:4, 4:3. The exact price shows before you generate.

  6. 6

    Generate and share

The video is usually ready in 2 to 4 minutes. Download it and send it to family, or keep it as a keepsake.

Why use this tool

  • Restore and animate in one job

Many animate-old-photo tools only add motion. Here the photo is repaired first, so the animation starts from a cleaner, sharper picture.

  • Identity stays the same

Restoration sharpens faces and clothing without changing anyone’s features, and the motion prompt adds no new people, no scene changes and no new clothes.

  • Four preset motion styles

Motion comes from preset styles written for respectful, natural movement. There is no free-text prompt, which keeps results gentle and predictable.

  • Group photos supported

The Family Moment style brings everyone in the photo subtly to life, with gentle smiles and small natural movements.

  • Private by default

Revived photos are never published, shared or shown on public pages. They stay in your own creations.

  • Full refund on failure

You pay once for restore plus video. If any step fails, the whole charge comes back to your balance.

How much does it cost to animate an old photo?

You pay in credits, and the price depends on the model, length and resolution you pick, plus 7 credits if Restore is on. The price is calculated by the same function that charges you, and it is shown on the button before you generate.

The four motion styles

Each style is a fixed motion prompt. Every style keeps the same people, clothes and setting from the photo.

  • Gentle Memory (default): a soft smile slowly forming, a blink, the slightest head turn, with warm vintage-film pacing.
  • Warm Smile: the person breaks into a genuine smile and their eyes brighten. Good for portraits where the subject looks serious.
  • Coming Alive: the person looks around as if waking into the moment, with natural eye movement and soft breathing.
  • Family Moment: for group photos. Everyone comes subtly to life with gentle smiles and small movements.

What the restore step fixes

Restore runs before the animation. It removes scratches, dust, tears, stains and creases, recovers faded colors with natural tones that suit the photo’s period, and sharpens facial details, clothing texture and the background. It is told to keep the exact composition, every person, every expression and the original era, and not to modernize the photo.

If you only want a repaired still image without the video, use the separate Photo Restoration tool, which can also keep the photo black and white or colorize it.

Tips for the best result

  • Scan the print if you can. A flat, evenly lit scan beats a phone photo taken at an angle under a lamp.
  • Crop out the album page, frame or white border so the photo fills the image.
  • One clear face gives the most natural motion. For group photos, choose the Family Moment style.
  • Keep Restore on for faded or scratched prints. Turn it off only when the photo is already clean.
  • Try a cheaper draft first (Seedance 2 Fast, 480p, 5 seconds) to see which motion style suits the photo, then render the keeper on Seedance 2 at 720p or 1080p.
  • Choose "Photo’s shape" to keep the original framing, or 9:16 for WhatsApp Status and Reels.

Use cases

  • Remembrance posts and memorial slideshows for loved ones who have passed.
  • Anniversary surprises: an old wedding photo of parents or grandparents, gently brought to life.
  • Family WhatsApp groups and reunions: share a revived childhood or school photo.
  • Birthday tributes for an older relative, starting from a photo of them when they were young.
  • Family history projects: give old ancestor portraits a moment of motion.

What it can’t do

Being clear about limits helps you get a good result and avoid surprises.

  • No talking or singing. The video has no audio and no lip sync; the motion is facial expression and small movements only.
  • No custom motion prompts. Motion comes from the four preset styles only.
  • One photo per video, up to 10 seconds. It does not join several photos into a slideshow.
  • It is for your own family photos. Photos of other people’s children are not allowed.
  • Very small, heavily blurred or mostly missing faces limit what restoration can recover.

Frequently asked questions

How do I animate an old photo with AI?

Upload the photo to Revive Old Photos, confirm the family-photo consent, keep Restore on for damaged prints, pick a motion style such as Gentle Memory or Warm Smile, choose the model, length and resolution, and generate. The AI repairs the photo first, then turns it into a short video with gentle natural motion, usually in 2 to 4 minutes.

Can I animate old photos for free?

New accounts get 10 free credits, but the lowest-priced revival costs 24 credits, so you need credits to make a video. The Lite pack gives 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, which covers 12 revivals at the lowest-priced setting or 3 at the default setting. One-time pack credits never expire.

How does AI restore an old photo before animating it?

The restoration pass removes scratches, dust, tears, stains and creases, recovers faded colors with realistic tones that match the photo’s historical period, and sharpens facial details and clothing texture, while preserving every person, expression and the original composition. The photo is repaired, never modernized or reinvented.

Will the person in the photo still look like themselves?

Yes. Identity preservation is the core rule of both stages. Restoration enhances detail without changing anyone’s features, and the animation adds only gentle movement on top of the restored image, with no new people, scene changes or new clothes.

What kind of motion does the memory video have?

Deliberately subtle motion: a soft smile forming, a blink, a slight head turn, soft breathing. It feels like a photograph taking a breath rather than a dramatic animation, which is what keeps it moving rather than uncanny, especially for photos of loved ones who have passed.

Can I animate a black and white photo?

Yes. With Restore on, faded color is recovered with natural period-appropriate tones before animating. If you want a repaired still that stays black and white, use the Photo Restoration tool, which lets you keep it monochrome or colorize it.

Can I animate a group or family photo?

Yes. Pick the Family Moment style, which brings everyone in the photo subtly to life with gentle smiles and small natural movements. Single portraits give the most detailed facial motion; in large groups each face is small, so the motion is subtler.

Can I make an old photo talk or sing?

Not with this tool. Revive Old Photos produces silent videos with gentle facial motion only. To make a photo speak a script, VdoBloom’s AI Avatar tool turns a photo and audio into a talking video.

Can I animate a photo that is not damaged?

Yes. The restore step is optional. If your photo is already clean, turn it off to save 7 credits and go straight to the animation. For damaged prints, restoring first gives the animation a better source image and a noticeably better video.

Can I revive a childhood photo, and is it private?

Yes, when it is your own family photo: before generating you confirm that you are the person in the photo, or their parent or legal guardian. Photos of other people’s children are not allowed. Revived photos stay private to your account and are never published, shared or shown on public pages.
