How to Restore and Animate an Old Family Photo
Restore and animate an old family photo with AI: fix scratches, colorize, add a gentle smile or blink. Credit costs, privacy and tips for grandparents.
To animate an old family photo with AI, repair it first and animate it second. On VdoBloom you upload a scan or a phone photo of the print to Animate Old Photos, keep Restore first on (7 credits) to fix scratches, creases and fading, pick a gentle motion such as a soft smile or a blink, and get a 5, 8 or 10 second video in a few minutes. The cheapest revival is 24 credits and the default setup is 89. The 10 free signup credits are not enough for a video, but they do cover two still restorations (5 credits each) on Restore Old Photos. The motion is a short, invented moment, not a real memory, and it stays private to your account.

Step 1: restore the photo (and colorize it if you want)
Damage gets worse once a photo moves. A scratch across a cheek can turn into a flickering line when the face smiles, so the clean-up has to happen before the animation.
You have two ways to do it:
- Inside the animate tool. Keep Restore first switched on. It removes scratches, dust, tears, creases and fading before the video starts, for 7 extra credits, all in one job.
- As a separate still first. Use Restore Old Photos for 5 credits when you want more control. Choose Keep original tone or Colorize, and Light wear or Heavy damage (which also fills small torn or missing areas). Download the result, then upload it to the animate tool with Restore first turned off.
The separate route is worth it if you want color. A black and white print stays black and white unless you choose Colorize, which aims for natural, period-accurate skin and fabric colors rather than a modern, oversaturated look.
Step 2: animate it with a gentle motion
- Open Animate Old Photos and tick the box confirming it is your own family photo. For a childhood photo, you confirm you are the person in it, or their parent or legal guardian.
- Upload the photo, original or restored.
- Pick a motion style. Gentle Memory is the calmest. Warm Smile adds a soft smile. Coming Alive is a little livelier. Family Moment brings everyone in a group photo subtly to life.
- Choose the model (Seedance 2 or Seedance 2 Fast), the length (5, 8 or 10 seconds), the resolution and the shape. You can keep the photo's own shape or pick 9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 3:4 or 4:3.
- Check the price on the button and generate. The video is usually ready in 2 to 4 minutes.
How do I make a black and white photo move and smile?
Upload it as it is. Black and white and sepia photos animate fine, and the clip keeps the original tone. Choose Warm Smile for a soft smile, or Gentle Memory for a blink and a slight turn of the head. If you also want the photo in color, colorize it first in Restore Old Photos, then animate the colorized version.
Expect a subtle smile, not a laugh. The motion presets are written for small, natural movement on purpose, because big expressions on a face drawn from a single old picture are where results start to look wrong.
Tips for animating your grandparents' photo
- Use the clearest copy you have. Scan the print if you can. If you photograph it, lay it flat in daylight, hold the phone straight above it and avoid glare from glass frames.
- Crop to the person. A face that fills more of the frame gives the model more detail to work with than a tiny face in a wide shot.
- Start subtle. Gentle Memory first. Small motion looks like a memory; big motion on a familiar face tends to feel uncanny.
- Draft cheap, then make the keeper. Try Seedance 2 Fast at 480p (24 credits, or 31 with restore) before the 720p or 1080p version.
- Group photos: use Family Moment, and accept that people at the edges or out of focus will move less convincingly.
- Talk to family before sharing. The same clip can comfort one relative and upset another, especially after a recent loss. Send it privately first.
Can I animate an old family photo with AI for free?
Partly. New accounts get 10 free credits with no card. That covers two still restorations at 5 credits each, so you can repair and colorize photos for free. A moving video costs at least 24 credits, so you need a credit pack for that step. Packs are one-time purchases, so there is no subscription to cancel, and the credits never expire. You can also earn 10 extra credits for each friend who signs up with your referral link, and they get 10 too.
What does it cost?

The exact price is calculated before you generate and shown on the button. If any step fails, the whole charge returns to your balance.
Is it private?
Revived photos are not published, shared or shown on any public VdoBloom page. They appear only in your own creations. Download the finished MP4 and keep your own copy, as you would with any keepsake. Upload only photos of your own family, and every job follows VdoBloom's content policy.
What AI photo animation cannot do
- It does not recover what the person really looked like when moving. The motion is generated, so treat it as an illustration of a moment, not a record.
- It cannot fix a face that is missing or almost completely faded. Restoration fills small gaps from nearby detail, not whole features.
- It does not add a voice. For a photo that speaks, the AI Talking Avatar tool lip-syncs a photo to an audio file.
- Longer than 10 seconds is not offered on this tool. For a longer tribute, join several clips in an editor.

Frequently asked questions
How can I animate an old family photo with AI for free?
The 10 free signup credits cover two still restorations, but an animated clip starts at 24 credits, so the video step needs a credit pack. Packs are one-time, with no subscription, and the credits never expire.
How do I restore and animate an old damaged photo with AI?
Upload it to Animate Old Photos with Restore first switched on. The tool repairs scratches, creases and fading, then animates the cleaned photo in the same job. For heavy damage or colorizing, restore it first in Restore Old Photos (5 credits), then animate the result with restore off.
How can I make a black and white photo move and smile?
Upload it and pick the Warm Smile motion style. The clip keeps the black and white tone. To make it color as well, colorize it first in Restore Old Photos.
How do I animate my grandparents' old photo?
Scan or photograph the print flat in good light, crop to their faces, keep Restore first on, and start with the Gentle Memory style at 480p as a cheap draft. Make the final version at 720p or 1080p once you like the motion, and share it privately with family first.
Does it work on group photos?
Yes. Choose Family Moment, which brings everyone subtly to life with small smiles and natural movement.
