AI Character Sheet Generator: Make a Character Reference Sheet From a Photo or Text

The VdoBloom AI character sheet generator draws one character from three angles (front, side and back) at the same scale on a clean white background. Turn on the expressions row and the same sheet adds five face close-ups: neutral, happy, angry, surprised and sad. Every sheet costs 5 credits, and new accounts get 10 free credits, enough for two sheets before you buy anything.

You can start from a single reference photo or piece of artwork, from a written description, or from both. Pick a realistic, anime, 3D-animated or comic style, add outfit notes if you want different clothes, and choose a 16:9 or 4:3 canvas. With a photo, the sheet keeps that face, hairstyle, skin tone, build and colors in every view.

It is built for people who need the same character to look the same again and again: AI video creators, comic and manga makers, game and tabletop designers, writers planning original characters, and animators who want a quick turnaround before a project starts. Each result has an Animate button that opens it in image-to-video.

How it works

  1. 1

Add a reference photo, a description, or both

Upload one clear, full-body photo or drawing of the character, or describe them in a sentence or two (up to 600 characters). With a photo, the description is optional and can add details the photo does not show, such as age or build.

  2. 2

    Choose the style

Pick Realistic, Anime, 3D animated or Comic. The same reference can be run in each style to compare looks.

  3. 3

    Add outfit notes (optional)

Type the clothes you want, for example "a red pleated skirt and black tights". The character stays the same; only the outfit changes in every view.

  4. 4

    Pick the layout and shape

Choose 3 views (front, side, back) or 3 views plus an expressions row, and a 16:9 or 4:3 canvas. 16:9 gives the figures more room side by side; 4:3 leaves more height for the expressions row.

  5. 5

    Generate, download or animate

The credit cost is shown next to the Generate button before you start. Download the finished sheet, or press Animate to take it straight into image-to-video as the first frame.

Why use this tool

  • Front, side and back in one image

All three full-body views sit in one clean line-up at the same scale and spacing, in a relaxed neutral pose, so proportions are easy to compare.

  • Optional expressions row

Five head-and-shoulders close-ups (neutral, happy, angry, surprised, sad) below the turnaround, so you have the face reference as well as the body.

  • Identity kept from your photo

With a reference image, the face, hairstyle, skin tone, body type and colors carry into every view. The photo’s own background and pose are ignored.

  • Four art styles

Photorealistic, anime with clean cel shading, stylized 3D animated, or western comic with bold ink outlines and flat colors.

  • Outfit changes without a new character

Outfit notes dress the same character in new clothes across all views, which is handy for costume variants and seasonal looks.

  • Clean white background, no labels

Sheets come on plain white with no text, captions or watermark baked into the art, ready to crop or drop into a reference board.

  • One click to video

The Animate button hands the sheet to image-to-video, so the character you locked here is the one that moves.

  • Clear, flat price

5 credits per sheet whichever style or layout you choose, shown before you generate. A failed generation is refunded automatically.

Is the AI character sheet generator free?

You can try it for free. Every new VdoBloom account gets 10 free credits at sign-up, and a character sheet costs 5 credits, so the free credits cover two complete sheets. After that you buy credits: the Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, or $15 a month on a subscription. One-time pack credits never expire; subscription credits reset each billing cycle.

There is no separate subscription just for this tool. The same credits work across every image, video and audio tool on VdoBloom.

What a character sheet costs

The price is the same for every option. With a reference photo the sheet runs on GPT Image 2.5 image-to-image; from a description only it runs on GPT Image 2.5 text-to-image. Both run at 2K resolution so each face in a multi-figure sheet stays readable, and both cost 5 credits.

Which style should you pick?

The style changes how the character is drawn, not who they are. Pick the one that matches where the character will end up.

What goes on a character reference sheet?

A character reference sheet (also called a ref sheet, model sheet or turnaround) is one image that shows a character from several angles so anyone drawing or generating that character later gets the same result. Professional sheets usually include a front view, a side or profile view, a back view and a set of facial expressions. Some add a color palette, a prop breakdown or written notes.

VdoBloom sheets cover the core of that: the three full-body views and, if you choose, five expressions. They come without written labels or palette swatches, so add notes or color chips in your own design tool if your team needs them.

  • Front view: the face, outfit details and overall silhouette.
  • Side view: the profile, nose and chin shape, hair depth and how clothing sits.
  • Back view: hairstyle from behind, back of the outfit, bags or capes.
  • Expressions row: how the face changes with emotion while staying the same person.

How to use a character sheet for consistent AI video

AI video models invent details they cannot see. If a clip starts from a single front-facing portrait, the back of the head or the side of the outfit can change from shot to shot. A turnaround fixes those details first, so every later generation has the same reference to work from.

A simple workflow: make the sheet here, keep the version you like as the master reference, then press Animate or upload the sheet to a video tool that accepts reference images. When the character’s look changes for a story reason, make a new sheet and keep the old one, so you always know which version a scene used.

Who uses a character turnaround generator

The same sheet serves different jobs depending on who makes it.

  • AI filmmakers and short-video creators locking a lead character before a series.
  • Comic, manga and webtoon artists who need a model sheet before drawing pages.
  • Indie game developers and tabletop players visualizing player characters, NPCs and villains.
  • Writers and worldbuilders turning a written description into a picture they can share.
  • Brands designing a mascot that has to look the same in every ad.
  • Animators and students who want a quick turnaround to study proportions.

Tips for a better character sheet

Small changes to the input make the biggest difference to the result.

  • Use a full-body, well-lit reference with the face clearly visible. A cropped selfie gives the model nothing to go on for legs, shoes or the back of the outfit.
  • Plain clothing in the photo plus outfit notes gives cleaner costume changes than a busy original outfit.
  • Describe what the photo cannot show: height, build, age, or a tail or wings on a fantasy character.
  • Keep descriptions concrete. "Short silver bob, amber eyes, oversized green bomber jacket" works better than "cool futuristic girl".
  • Choose 3 views + expressions when the face matters most, such as for talking-head or dialogue scenes.
  • Run the same reference in two styles before committing a whole project to one look.

What it can’t do (yet)

Being clear about limits saves credits. The sheet is a picture, not a game-rules document: it does not write stats, ability scores or backstories for tabletop play. It always uses a neutral standing pose, so for action poses run your reference photo through Pose Variations. Each run returns one sheet, and the layout is fixed to the two options above, with no three-quarter view, written labels or color palette strip. Transparent backgrounds are not offered here; use the Background Remover on a crop if you need one.

Only upload photos you have the right to use. Uploads of real people need your consent confirmation, and the usual content rules apply to every sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI character sheet generator?

It is a tool that turns a photo or a written description into a character reference sheet: the same character drawn from the front, side and back at matching proportions, often with a row of facial expressions. On VdoBloom it produces the three views on a white background, plus five expressions if you choose that layout.

Can I make a character sheet for free?

Yes, to start. New accounts get 10 free credits and a sheet costs 5, so you can make two full sheets free. More credits start with the Lite pack: 300 credits for $19.50 one-time or $15 a month.

What is a character turnaround sheet?

A turnaround sheet shows the same character from the front, side and back at identical proportions. Artists and animators use it as the reference that keeps a character consistent from scene to scene; for AI video it does the same job, locking the face, hair and outfit before you animate.

Will the sheet look like the person in my photo?

Yes. With a reference photo, the generator keeps the face, hairstyle, skin tone, build and colors in all three views and in the expressions row, and ignores the photo’s background and pose. A clear, well-lit, full-body photo gives the most faithful result. Only upload photos you have the right to use.

Can I make a character sheet from text only?

Yes. Leave the photo empty and describe the character in up to 600 characters. The sheet is then generated with GPT Image 2.5 text-to-image at the same 5-credit price.

What art styles are available?

Four: Realistic, Anime, 3D animated and Comic. The style changes the rendering only, so you can run the same reference in several styles and compare.

Can I change the character’s outfit?

Yes. Write the new clothing in the outfit notes, for example a red pleated skirt and black tights, and the sheet shows the same character wearing it from every angle.

How much does a character sheet cost?

Every sheet costs 5 credits, whether it comes from a photo or a description and whichever style and layout you pick. The exact cost is shown next to the Generate button before you create anything, and failed generations are refunded automatically.

Can I use the character sheets commercially?

Under VdoBloom’s Terms of Service you keep ownership of the content you upload and generate, and you are responsible for how you use it. Make sure you have the rights to any reference photo or artwork you upload.

Can I turn the character sheet into a video?

Yes. Every result has an Animate button that opens image-to-video with the sheet already loaded. You can also download the sheet and use it as a reference image in other video tools.
