AI Tattoo Generator: Design a Tattoo, Make the Stencil, Try It On

VdoBloom’s AI tattoo generator turns a written idea or a photo into a tattoo flash design, converts any design into a clean black-line stencil, and shows the design inked on a photo of your own arm, back or leg. All four steps live on one page, so you can go from “a fox curled around a crescent moon” to a printable stencil and a skin preview in a few minutes.

Is it free? You get 10 free credits when you sign up, which covers two designs. After that each design, stencil or try-on costs 5 credits on GPT Image 2.5 or Qwen Image 2.1, or 18 credits if you pick Nano Banana Pro for a photo-based design. The Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time (60 five-credit images) and pack credits never expire. There is no subscription to cancel unless you choose a monthly plan.

It is built for people planning a first or next tattoo, for tattoo artists who want fast client concepts and stencils, and for anyone who wants to see a style on their skin before booking. The output is a visual guide for you and your artist; a professional still adjusts size, line weight and placement on the day.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick a mode

Choose Design from an idea, Design from a photo, Stencil, or Try it on your skin. Each mode is one image per click, priced before you press Create.

  2. 2

Describe the idea or upload a reference

Write your idea in up to 300 characters, or upload a pet, flower, object or drawing. Add optional lettering of up to 40 characters, which is printed exactly as you type it.

  3. 3

    Choose a style and placement

Pick one of nine styles. In idea mode, the placement (forearm, wrist, back, shoulder or ankle) sets the shape of the design, from tall and narrow for a forearm to a band for an ankle. Surprise me picks a random combination.

  4. 4

    Create, then refine

The design comes back as a single flash piece on a plain white background at 2K. Upscale it, run it through Stencil for line-only transfer art, or send it to Try it on your skin with a photo of the body area.

Why use this tool

  • Idea, photo, stencil and try-on in one tool

The four jobs most people use separate apps for share one page and one credit balance.

  • Nine tattoo styles

Fine line, traditional, blackwork, minimalist, Japanese irezumi, watercolor, geometric, mandala and script lettering.

  • Placement-shaped designs

Forearm designs come back tall (2:3), wrist and ankle wide (3:2), shoulder square, back 3:4, so the composition suits the spot.

  • Exact lettering

Names, dates and short quotes go in their own field and are reproduced character for character.

  • Real stencil output

Stencil mode traces every contour as single-weight black lines on white, with no shading or grey, ready for thermal stencil paper.

  • Skin preview that follows the body

Try-on keeps your photo as it is and renders the design as healed ink that follows the curve of the arm, back, calf or hand.

What can the AI tattoo generator make?

The tool has four modes. Each one solves a different step between “I have an idea” and “I’m sitting in the chair”.

Which tattoo styles can I generate?

Each style is written into the prompt with its defining traits, so a traditional piece comes back with bold outlines and a limited red, yellow, green and black palette, while a fine line piece keeps thin single-needle lines and open skin.

StyleWhat it looks likeGood for
Fine lineThin single-needle black lines, minimal shading, airy negative spaceSmall florals, animals, delicate symbols

BlackworkSolid black fills, strong contrast, graphic shapes, no colorBold statement pieces, cover-up ideas
MinimalistA few clean lines and simple symbolic shapesWrist, ankle and finger-sized ideas
Japanese irezumiBold outlines, wind bars and waves, rich traditional colorKoi, dragons, larger arm and back pieces

How much does it cost to design a tattoo?

Every Create makes one image and charges for one image. A failed image is refunded automatically. Here is what typical sessions cost, using the 5-credit models:

  • Lite: 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, or $15 a month as a subscription.
  • One-time pack credits never expire. Subscription credits reset each billing cycle.
  • At Lite one-time pricing a 5-credit design works out to about 33 cents.

How do I turn a photo into a tattoo design?

Open Design from a photo and upload a clear, well-lit picture of the subject: a pet, a flower, an object, a hand-drawn sketch or a reference tattoo. Pick a style. The model keeps what makes the subject recognisable, its shape, pose and key details, and redraws it as tattoo art on a white background instead of a photo.

GPT Image 2.5 (5 credits) handles most subjects well. Nano Banana Pro (18 credits) is the option to try when a pet portrait needs closer likeness. If you want the result as stencil line art, run it through Stencil next.

Making a tattoo stencil with AI

Stencil mode takes any design, including one made elsewhere or drawn by hand, and converts it into transfer line art: crisp, single-weight pure black outlines on pure white, tracing every important contour and inner detail, with no shading, grey, color fills, texture or background. The proportions and composition of the original are kept, and the output follows the shape of the image you upload.

Print it on thermal stencil paper or hand it to your artist as a clean reference. Artists usually still adjust line weight and size for the body; treat the AI stencil as a fast first pass, not a final transfer that skips their review.

Preview a tattoo on your own skin

Try it on your skin takes two uploads: a photo of the body area (no face needed) and the design. Choose the area from forearm, wrist, upper arm, shoulder, back, chest, calf, ankle or hand. The photo itself stays the same, same skin, pose, framing and lighting, and the design is rendered as healed ink that bends with the body and takes the scene’s light.

It is the quickest way to compare two sizes or two styles on the same spot before a consultation. The preview is an AI illustration: real ink on real skin heals differently, and skin tone, placement and the artist’s technique all change the final look.

Tips for better AI tattoo designs

A few habits make the first result much closer to what you want.

  • Name one subject and one or two details (“a koi swimming upward through two waves”) rather than a list of five symbols.
  • Let the style do the work: avoid writing style words into the idea when you have already picked a style.
  • Put names and dates in the lettering field, not the idea field, so they are spelled exactly.
  • Pick the placement first. A forearm design is composed tall; the same idea for a wrist comes back compact and wide.
  • For photo designs, crop to the subject and use even light. Busy backgrounds add noise to the line work.
  • Make the stencil from the final design you like, not from an early draft. It traces what it is given.
  • For try-on, photograph the area straight on in daylight, with the skin filling most of the frame.

What the tattoo generator can’t do

Being clear about limits saves credits. The generator makes one image per click; there is no batch mode or flash-sheet layout. It does not take exact measurements, so sizing in centimetres is done by your artist when printing. Try-on works on one area per image and does not wrap a design around a full sleeve. Uploads need a consent tick, and you should only upload your own designs or art you have rights to: no brand logos or other artists’ work.

Can I use the designs commercially or take them to an artist?

Yes. Under the VdoBloom terms you keep ownership of the images you generate, so you can bring a design to any studio, print the stencil, or use the art in your own flash or client work. Avoid prompts that copy another artist’s signature piece, a trademark or a character you don’t own.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI tattoo generator?

VdoBloom gives you 10 free credits at sign-up, enough for two tattoo designs at 5 credits each. After that you buy credits; the Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time and those credits never expire.

Can AI make a tattoo stencil from a photo?

Yes. Upload the photo to Design from a photo to get tattoo art, then run that design through Stencil. Stencil outputs single-weight black outlines on white with no shading, ready to print on thermal paper. Each step costs 5 credits.

Can I see what a tattoo will look like on me?

Use Try it on your skin. Upload a photo of the body area and the design, choose from nine areas such as forearm, upper arm, back or calf, and the tool renders the design as healed ink on your photo. It is a visual guide, not a guarantee of how real ink will heal.

What tattoo styles can the AI generate?

Nine: fine line, traditional (old school), blackwork, minimalist, Japanese irezumi, watercolor, geometric, mandala and script lettering. You can pick a style in both idea mode and photo mode.

Can the AI add a name or quote to a tattoo?

Yes. In Design from an idea, type up to 40 characters in the lettering field. It is reproduced exactly, character for character. For a lettering-only piece, choose the script lettering style.

Can I upload my own tattoo design?

Yes. Stencil and Try it on your skin both accept a design you already have, whether you drew it, an artist sent it, or you made it in another tool. Only upload designs you have rights to.

Which model should I use?

GPT Image 2.5 at 5 credits is the default for every mode. Qwen Image 2.1, also 5 credits, is an alternative for stencils and try-on. Nano Banana Pro at 18 credits is offered for photo-based designs when you want closer likeness of a pet or object.

Can I take an AI-generated tattoo to my tattoo artist?

Yes, and that is how it works well. Bring the design and the stencil as references. A good artist will adjust size, line weight and flow for your body, and many will redraw it in their own hand.

How big is the downloaded design?

Designs are generated at 2K. The idea and photo modes offer an Upscale button on the result if you need a larger file for printing. Every result is also saved to My Creations.

Can I use AI tattoo designs commercially?

Under VdoBloom’s terms you keep ownership of what you generate, so you can use designs in your own flash, client work or merchandise. Avoid trademarks, characters and other artists’ recognisable work in your prompts.
