Animate old photos: turn a still family photo into a gentle memory video

What it does: takes one photo, optionally repairs visible damage and color loss, then produces a short video where the people in the photo show small, natural signs of life — a smile forming, a blink, a slight turn of the head. The restoration prompt names the damage it targets (scratches, dust, tears, stains, creases, faded or shifted color) and what it must not do: modernize the photo or change anyone's identity.

What it does not do: it does not make the person talk, sing, dance or perform a scripted action — that is a different tool (AI Talking Avatar). It does not add new people, change the background or move the scene. It does not take a custom animation prompt; you choose one of four preset motion styles. And it does not fall back silently: if the restoration fails, the job fails and you are refunded, so you can try again or switch the restoration off.

If you only want the repaired photo itself with no motion, this is the wrong tool — there is no way to download the restored still on its own from this flow.

Step 1 (restoration, optional, on by default) sends the photo to VdoBloom's automatic image-edit chain with a fixed restoration instruction and gets back a repaired image. It is priced at a flat 7 credits, the same rate as an automatic image edit elsewhere on VdoBloom.

Step 2 (animation) sends the photo — restored, or as uploaded if the restoration is off — to Seedance 2 or Seedance 2 Fast as the first frame, with the chosen motion preset. Seedance's own output check is on for every run. Seedance 2 renders at 480p, 720p or 1080p; Seedance 2 Fast at 480p or 720p. Both run for 5, 8 or 10 seconds.

Both steps are one charge, taken before the job starts: restoration (0 or 7 credits) plus the animation price. The quote shown in the tool comes from the same server function that charges it, so the number you see is the number you pay, and a failure anywhere refunds all of it.

The obvious use is a memory video for family sharing: a grandparent's only surviving portrait, a wedding photo from decades ago, a childhood photo of a parent, a photo of someone who has passed away. The restraint of the four motion presets (no dramatic movement, no added people) is made for this — it reads as respectful rather than as a novelty effect.

It is for your own family's photos. Photos of other people's children are not allowed, and what you make stays in your account rather than being published anywhere by VdoBloom.

It is not built for marketing, product or creative animation — the fixed presets and the "no scene changes" instruction rule that out. For a written animation prompt or dramatic motion, VdoBloom's general Image to Video tool is the better fit.

Input is one photo per job: JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB. Output is 5, 8 or 10 seconds, at 480p, 720p or 1080p on Seedance 2 and 480p or 720p on Seedance 2 Fast, in the photo's own shape or 9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 3:4 or 4:3.

Restoration is a flat 7 credits, charged only if you leave it on. The table shows the animation prices; add 7 for a restored run. The default run (restoration on, Seedance 2, 720p, 5 seconds) is 89 credits.

Leave restoration on for any scanned print, faded photo, or photo with visible scratches or tears. Turn it off only for photos already in good digital condition, to save the 7 credits.

Pick the motion preset that matches the photo's framing: Gentle Memory and Coming Alive read naturally on solo portraits, while Family Moment is meant for group photos where more than one person should move a little.

Try a cheap version first — Seedance 2 Fast at 480p for 5 seconds is 31 credits with restoration — and move to Seedance 2 at 720p or 1080p once you like how the photo comes to life.

Upload the highest-quality scan or photograph you have — the restoration model repairs an image rather than inventing one, so more visible detail gives it more to work with.
