How to Make a Seamless Loop or Boomerang Video With AI

How to make a seamless loop video with AI: the photo and clip routes, prompts that loop, the seam mistakes to avoid, and which model to pick.

By VdoBloom Team

You make a seamless loop on VdoBloom in one of two ways: from a photo, which is used as both the first and the last frame so the clip starts and ends on the same image, or from an existing video, whose tail is cross-faded into its head. The photo route generates new motion with AI; the video route blends your clip with no generation at all. Either way the goal is the same: a clip you can play on repeat with no visible restart. This guide walks through both routes, the prompts that work, and the mistakes that leave a seam.

Updated October 2026.

What a seamless loop actually is

A seamless loop is a video whose last frame matches its first, so when it rewinds to the start the eye cannot see the cut. The rule VdoBloom builds to is literal: the video starts and ends on exactly the same image, and the motion in between is gentle and cyclical, returning precisely to the starting position by the last frame. Get that right and the clip runs forever; get it slightly wrong and the restart reads as a flicker or a jump.

That is why a loop is not just a short video played twice. A one-directional action — someone walking, a door closing — cannot loop cleanly, because there is no frame where the end equals the beginning. The loops that work are ambient: drifting light, rippling water, slow breathing, particles in the air.

When a seamless loop is the right format

Live and looping footage is wanted in a handful of specific slots, and VdoBloom targets each with its own output shape:

  • Music canvas (Spotify Canvas): vertical 9:16, 3 to 8 seconds, silent, no text. The Spotify Canvas motion pins the output to this shape automatically.
  • Phone live wallpaper: vertical 9:16.
  • Website hero background: 16:9, looping silently behind a headline.
  • Square 1:1: for feed posts and profile backgrounds that need a moving image.
  • Original shape: keeps whatever aspect your source already has.

Each target caps its own length, and the canvas target is deliberately short. If your output shape is already decided by where the clip will live, checking the aspect rules first saves a re-render — the same logic as choosing a format before you shoot, which we cover in best aspect ratio for YouTube Shorts.

The two ways to build one in VdoBloom

Open the Seamless Loop tool and you get a toggle: From a photo or From a video. They behave differently and cost differently.

From a photo, the image you upload becomes both the first and the last frame of the clip, and the model generates gentle motion between them. A visible seam the model leaves behind is cross-faded away on the server. This is the route that creates something from a single still.

From a video, no AI generation happens at all. The tool cross-fades any clip’s tail into its head with ffmpeg — the fast, cheap way to close a loop on footage you already have.

Step by step: from a photo

  1. Upload your photo. It is used as the first and the last frame, so pick an image with room for subtle motion — a still with some texture, light or water in it beats a plain flat background.
  2. Choose a motion. The presets are Living photo (gentle breathing, a slow blink, hair and fabric stirring), Wind & water (grass, leaves, ripples, shimmer), Glow & light (softly flickering light, drifting rays), Spotify Canvas (atmospheric drift over album art), or Custom.
  3. Add prompt detail if you want it. For any preset except Custom the text box is optional — use it to name what should move. Custom requires a short description or it will not run.
  4. Pick where it will play. Original shape, Music canvas 9:16, Phone wallpaper 9:16, Website hero 16:9, or Square 1:1. Choosing Spotify Canvas pins the target to Music canvas for you.
  5. Set the loop length, model and resolution. The length options depend on the model and the target’s maximum.
  6. Optionally export a GIF or animated WebP alongside the MP4, which is handy when the loop is going somewhere that will not play video.
  7. Generate. The credit cost is shown before anything runs, and a failed render is refunded.

For a sense of scale: the default configuration — Kling 3.0 at 720p for a 5-second loop — quotes 28 credits. Longer clips and higher resolutions cost more; the number on the button is exactly what is charged.

Step by step: from a video

  1. Switch to From a video.
  2. Upload a clip (MP4 or MOV, up to 60 seconds) or pick one of your own finished videos.
  3. Set the blend at the seam. A slider from 0.3 to 1.5 seconds controls how long the tail cross-fades into the head; the default is 0.8 seconds. A longer blend hides a harder mismatch but can read as a soft dissolve if it is too long.
  4. Choose the target and any GIF or WebP export.
  5. Generate. This route costs a flat 10 credits because nothing is generated — the tool only blends and re-encodes your clip.

Prompt examples that loop well

Because the motion has to return to where it started, the prompts that loop well are cyclical. A few that fit the Custom motion field:

  • “steam rises from the coffee and settles back down”
  • “a flag ripples in a slow breeze and comes back to rest”
  • “candle flame flickers and steadies”
  • “dust drifts slowly through a shaft of light”
  • “water ripples across a pond and smooths out”

Notice what they share: the action completes. Your custom line just narrows the subject, because the loop prompt underneath already asks for motion that returns precisely to the starting position. Writing tighter prompts is a skill in its own right — see common AI video prompt mistakes.

Mistakes to avoid

Mismatched first and last frame. The classic visible seam: if the end frame does not match the start, the loop visibly snaps. VdoBloom’s photo mode avoids this by design — the photo is both frames — but if you are looping an external clip, the first and last frames must match.

Speed mismatch at the seam. Even with matching frames, motion that is fast at the end and slow at the start makes the restart feel jerky. Keep motion gentle and constant, and on the video route widen the seam blend a little so the change is smoothed rather than abrupt.

Mismatched lighting. A loop that brightens through the clip and snaps back to a dark first frame flickers. Keep lighting even across the whole clip, or let the light change be part of a cycle that returns — a glow that pulses and settles, not one that only brightens.

Too much motion, and moving the camera. Big actions rarely loop cleanly. Keep the camera locked and let the subject move; a zoom or pan that does not return to its start is the most common cause of a loop that almost works.

Which model to pick

The photo route offers a model picker. Because a loop’s whole job is to end where it began, VdoBloom defaults to Kling 3.0 — in testing it returned closest to the starting image of the loop models. The other options trade cost against speed and sharpness: Seedance 2 Mini is the cheapest for quick drafts, Seedance 2 Fast is a quick everyday default, Seedance 2 and Seedance 2.5 add motion quality and up to 1080p, and Wan 3.0 is low cost per second. You can read more on the model page for Kling 3.0 video. If a draft misses, change the motion preset before you change the model — the preset usually matters more than the engine.

When a true loop is not achievable: boomerang and reverse loops

Some footage cannot loop honestly. A wave that only breaks once, a person mid-stride, a door swinging shut — none has a frame where the end equals the beginning, so no amount of blending will make it seamless. The standard workaround is the boomerang or ping-pong loop: play the clip forward, then reverse it and append the reversed copy, so the end flows back into the start. A mirror loop does the same thing horizontally, flipping the image on the second pass. Both are editing techniques you apply in an editor, not VdoBloom exports, and both hide the seam by turning the restart into a direction change the eye accepts. Reach for a boomerang when the motion is one-directional and a true loop is impossible; reach for a real loop when the subject is ambient.

If you want loops as part of a larger production, the same ambient footage feeds music work too — see how it fits into making an AI music video. And check the pricing page for current plan details before you generate a batch.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a video loop seamlessly?

The last frame matches the first, and the motion in between returns to its starting position. On VdoBloom the photo route does this by using your photo as both the first and the last frame; the video route does it by cross-fading the tail into the head.

How much does a seamless loop cost on VdoBloom?

The video route is a flat 10 credits, because no AI generation runs. The photo route depends on the model, length and resolution: the default Kling 3.0 at 720p for 5 seconds quotes 28 credits. The cost is shown before you generate, and a failed render is refunded.

Can I turn a photo into a looping video?

Yes. In the photo route the image becomes both the first and last frame and the model adds gentle motion — breathing, drifting light, rippling water. A visible seam the model leaves is cross-faded away on the server.

What should I do if my clip will not loop cleanly?

If the action only goes one way, use a boomerang or ping-pong loop: play the clip forward, append it reversed, and optionally mirror it. It hides the seam by turning the restart into a direction change. For ambient footage, a true seamless loop looks better.

How long can a seamless loop be?

It depends on the target. A music canvas loop is 3 to 8 seconds; phone wallpaper, website hero, square and original-shape loops run up to 15 seconds in the photo route. The video route accepts a source clip of up to 60 seconds.

Ready to make one? Open the Seamless Loop tool, upload a photo or a clip, and let the motion preset do the work — start with a still of something ambient and a 9:16 target, and you will have a loop ready for a canvas, a wallpaper or a hero.
