Sora is being discontinued: what that means for you

OpenAI told users to export their videos from the Sora library before those dates. What “this content may violate our guardrails” meant

The Sora 2 system card describes two layers of checks:

1. Input blocking. Your prompt and any uploaded image were run through text and image classifiers before generation. If they flagged it, nothing was made.
2. Output blocking. After generation, video frames, audio transcripts, and a scene description were checked by classifiers and a reasoning model trained on OpenAI’s policies. A clip could be rendered and then withheld.

The wording of the message told you which area fired:

• “Guardrails concerning third-party likeness”: the video looked like a real, identifiable person who had not opted in. Sora only allowed real people through its cameo feature, where the person recorded themselves and granted permission. It did not support text-to-video of public figures.
• “Guardrails concerning similarity to third-party content”: the result resembled copyrighted characters, shows, games, or brands. Rights holders could ask for their material to be excluded, and OpenAI tightened these blocks after launch.
• A generic “content violation”: one of the main policy categories, such as sexual content and nudity, violence and gore, self-harm, extremism, wrongdoing, or political persuasion.

Why Sora blocked harmless prompts

Much of the frustration came from rules that were deliberately broad at launch:

• Photos of real people were restricted. The system card says OpenAI restricted “the use of image uploads that feature a photorealistic person and all video uploads”. A plain selfie could fail for that reason alone.
• Anything that might involve a minor was held to stricter thresholds. If a classifier thought someone in an upload might be under 18, later generations from that image got extra moderation. Family photos and youthful-looking adults hit this.
• The output check judged the finished video, not your intent. A dance or beach prompt could produce a frame the classifier read as too revealing, and the whole clip was withheld.
• Likeness checks worked on appearance. An original character that happened to resemble a celebrity, or a generic “superhero in a red and blue suit”, could trip the likeness or third-party checks.
• Audio counted too. Transcripts were checked, so a line of dialogue naming a real person or using crude slang could block an otherwise clean scene.

How to write prompts that avoid false positives on any model

Sora is going away, but the same habits help on Veo, Kling, and most other moderated models. None of this is about sneaking past a filter. It is about not sounding like something you are not asking for.

• Be literal about clothing and action. “A woman in a red sundress spinning on a rooftop at golden hour” reads very differently from “a hot girl showing off”.
• Invent characters instead of naming them. Describe species, colors, outfits, and personality rather than referencing a franchise.
• Keep real names out of prompts and dialogue. Use “a news anchor”, not a specific anchor.
• Show consequences instead of injuries. Action scenes work better with motion, debris, and camera shake than with wounds.
• Use a clean, adult-only source photo for image-to-video: one subject, good light, no children or bystanders.

If the idea itself is outside a provider’s policy, for example suggestive but fully clothed fashion or fitness content on a strict model, rewording will not fix it. Pick a model whose rules allow it.

Consent comes first: real faces and real people
