AI Voice Statistics 2026: How Long AI Voice Clips Really Are

AI voice statistics in practice: how long AI voice clips run, the character caps on each TTS engine, and what one clip costs on VdoBloom.

By VdoBloom Team

AI voice clips are short because of hard character and length caps, not because the models cannot speak for longer. On VdoBloom, ElevenLabs Multilingual V2 and Turbo 2.5 both stop at 5,000 characters (25 credits), Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS quietly truncates at 4,000 characters (24 credits), and xAI’s TTS has no enforced cap at all. The rest of the audio suite has its own ceilings too: sound effects run 1 to 10 seconds, karaoke videos up to 6 minutes, generated music 30 to 300 seconds, and an uploaded song 8 minutes. This is what those numbers mean in practice, and how to work inside them.

Updated October 2026.

Why the cap exists at all

The only AI voice statistics worth quoting are the caps and the prices, because those are the numbers that actually decide what you can make. Broader figures about the market change too fast to be useful in a workflow, and the honest position is that nobody outside the providers can measure them accurately — so this guide sticks to the limits and costs you can see on screen.

Text-to-speech is billed by input length, and every provider draws a line somewhere. VdoBloom passes those lines straight through rather than hiding them, which is why the character limit changes when you change engine. That is the single most useful thing to know: the length of your clip is decided before you type a word, by the engine you pick at the top of the Text to Speech tool.

Two of the four engines fail loudly. ElevenLabs Multilingual V2 and Turbo 2.5 reject a script over 5,000 characters with an explicit error, so you know immediately. Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS does the opposite: it accepts anything you paste and cuts it at 4,000 characters without telling you. xAI TTS has no cap enforced in the product. If you are pasting a long script, the difference between an error and silence matters a great deal.

The four engines and the clip length each one gives you

The ElevenLabs voice list is fixed and named — Rachel, Aria, Roger, Sarah, Laura, Charlie, George, Callum, River, Liam, Charlotte, Alice, Matilda, Will, Jessica, Eric, Chris, Brian, Daniel, Lily and Bill. Gemini and xAI expose a language selector instead, covering languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Urdu, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Indonesian.

How long is 1,000 characters?

Characters are the unit the product bills in, so it helps to translate them into something you can picture. At a normal narration pace, 1,000 characters is roughly 40 to 50 seconds of speech for a voice with steady pacing and no dramatic pauses. That is an approximation, not a measurement — pace, punctuation and the voice you choose all move it — but it is close enough to plan with.

Working from that rough conversion:

  • 1,000 characters is a short social voiceover, an intro line or a one-paragraph answer.
  • 2,000 to 3,000 characters is a two or three minute explainer, or a full ad read with a hook, body and call to action.
  • 4,000 characters is the ceiling on Gemini, and about three minutes of speech.
  • 5,000 characters is the ceiling on both ElevenLabs engines, and about four to five minutes.

Notice how close those last two are. The length difference between the cheapest long clip and the longest one is small; the difference in billing is one credit per 1,000 characters. Pick the engine for its voice and its behaviour, not for the extra thousand characters.

Clip lengths across the rest of the audio tools

Voice is only one of the ceilings in the suite, and the others are tighter than people expect. Sound effects are deliberately short — they are one-shots and loops, not beds. Music generation covers a real song length. The stem splitter accepts a full track but puts a firm six-minute limit on turning it into a karaoke video.

ToolLength it works inWhat it costs
Text to speechUp to 5,000 characters (ElevenLabs) or 4,000 (Gemini)5 or 6 credits per 1,000 characters
Sound effects (short)1 to 10 seconds0.8 credits per second
Sound effects (loops and ambience)Longer beds and loops, optional tempo and key1 credit per run
Music generation30 to 300 seconds12 credits (MiniMax Music 2.6) or 6 credits (ACE-Step)
Vocal remover and stem splitterUploads up to 25 MB and 8 minutes4 credits (vocals plus instrumental) or 20 credits (up to 12 stems)
Karaoke videoSong up to 6 minutes14 credits (the split plus the render)
Voice changerRecordings up to 120 secondsPer second of speech
TranscriptionPer started minute of audio6 credits per minute

Two of these numbers surprise people. The first is that a two-track split of a full song costs 4 credits — less than a single 1,000-character voiceover. The second is that the karaoke render, at 10 credits on top of the split, costs more than the separation itself, because the lyric timing and the video render run on VdoBloom’s own server rather than a provider’s.

What to do when your script is longer than the cap

The cap is not a problem to solve; it is a shape to design around. Long-form narration is normally a series of clips anyway, because you will want to fix one sentence without re-rendering the whole thing.

  1. Split at paragraph boundaries, not mid-sentence. Each clip then starts and ends cleanly, and you can drop them next to each other in any editor without a jarring join.
  2. Keep each part under 4,000 characters if there is any chance you will switch to Gemini later, so the script survives a change of engine.
  3. Generate the tone-setting section first. The first 1,000 characters tell you whether the voice is right for the script, and it is the cheapest possible test.
  4. Do not pad the script to reach a round number of credits. Credits are billed per started 1,000 characters, so a 1,010-character script costs the same as a 2,000-character one only if you actually paste 2,000.

If you want the same voice across a long series, note the exact voice name in your notes before you close the tab. Voice consistency across clips matters more than the clip length itself when the parts get edited together. The voice and lip-sync workflow guide walks through pairing a generated voice with a talking video, and there is more on the basics in AI text to speech.

What a clip costs, and how to pay for it

Credits are the unit for everything above. A new account starts with 10 free credits and no card, which covers a 1,000-character voiceover on either ElevenLabs engine, a two-track stem split, a 10-second sound effect or a 30-second music bed. The Lite plan is $15 a month for 300 credits, which works out at $0.05 a credit, or $10 a month when billed yearly. One-time credit packs start at $10.39 for 200 credits, they never expire, and there are India plans from ₹199 a month. VdoBloom shows the cost before every generation, and if a job fails the credits are refunded automatically. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

Output from a paid plan is watermark-free with commercial rights, and text to speech always returns a single MP3 file. If you are building a soundtrack rather than a voiceover, the sound effect generator and the voice generator cover the two halves of that job.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an AI voice clip be on VdoBloom?

Up to 5,000 characters on ElevenLabs Multilingual V2 and Turbo 2.5, which is roughly four to five minutes of speech, and up to 4,000 characters on Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS. xAI TTS has no character cap enforced in the product. Longer scripts are split into parts.

What happens if I paste more than the character limit?

It depends on the engine, and this is the part worth knowing before you spend. ElevenLabs returns an explicit error and refuses the job. Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS accepts the text and silently cuts everything past 4,000 characters, so you get a valid MP3 that stops early.

How many characters is a minute of speech?

Roughly 1,000 to 1,500, depending on pace and punctuation. Treat 1,000 characters as about 40 to 50 seconds for planning purposes, and check the first clip before you commit a long script to the same voice.

Do the length limits apply to the other audio tools too?

Yes, and they are tighter. Sound effects are 1 to 10 seconds, karaoke videos cap at 6 minutes of song, music generation runs 30 to 300 seconds, and uploaded songs can be up to 25 MB and 8 minutes. A voice recording for the voice changer caps at 120 seconds.

How is the cost worked out?

Text to speech is billed per started 1,000 characters — 5 credits on ElevenLabs and 6 on Gemini or xAI — so a full 5,000-character ElevenLabs job is 25 credits. Per-second and per-minute tools such as sound effects and transcription are billed on the measured length of the audio. The price is shown before every generation.
