AI Video Blurry or Low Quality? How to Get It Sharp

Why AI videos come out blurry, soft or pixelated, the settings that fix it before you render, and how to upscale a finished clip to 1080p or 4K.

By VdoBloom Team

An AI video usually looks blurry for one of five reasons: it was rendered at a draft resolution (480p or a draft mode), the source photo was small or compressed, the subject is too small in the frame, the motion is too fast for the frame rate, or the file was re-compressed when you uploaded or shared it. Fix the settings first (render the final at 1080p, start from a sharp image, keep motion moderate), then upscale only the keeper. On VdoBloom, Topaz Proteus upscales to 1080p or 4K from 4 credits a job (a 10-second 720p clip to 1080p is 7 credits); new accounts get 10 free credits.

Quick facts

  • Biggest cause: a draft render. 480p and draft modes are meant for testing ideas, not for the final.
  • Second biggest: the input. Image-to-video cannot add detail a blurry, small or screenshot photo never had.
  • Video upscaling on VdoBloom: Video Upscaler with Topaz Proteus (1080p or 4K, cleans noise and soft faces, clips up to 60 seconds) or Topaz Video Upscale (1x, 2x or 4x, clips up to 10 minutes, 3.2 credits a second, 5.6 at 4x, 30-credit minimum).
  • Image upscaling for the source photo: Image Upscaler with Topaz Wonder 3.5 from 4 credits; a 1920 × 1080 photo to 4K is 7 credits.
  • What upscaling cannot do: recover detail that was never there, fix a warped face, or undo heavy motion blur.

How to get a sharp AI video: 8 fixes

  1. Draft cheap, render the final at 1080p. Low tiers exist to test prompts. Once the motion is right, re-run the same prompt at 1080p. On Wan 2.6, a 5-second clip is 35 credits at 720p and 60 at 1080p; on P-Video it is 8 at 720p and 16 at 1080p. The price shows before you generate.
  2. Do not ship a draft mode. Some models, P-Video among them, offer a cheaper draft setting. It renders faster and softer. Use it to explore, not to finish.
  3. Start from a sharp image. For image-to-video, use the original photo, not a screenshot or a messaging-app copy. If the photo is small or soft, run it through the Image Upscaler before you animate it. Ten credits on the photo can save a re-render.
  4. Make the subject big in the frame. A face across a fifth of the frame gets far fewer pixels than a face filling half of it. Ask for a medium shot or close-up when faces matter.
  5. Slow the motion down. Fast action, whip pans and spinning cameras smear at normal frame rates. Describe one clear, moderate movement: “slow push-in”, “gentle handheld drift”. More in camera movement prompts.
  6. Ask for crisp light, not haze. Words like “dreamy”, “soft focus”, “fog” or “bokeh everywhere” tell the model to blur. If you want sharpness, say “sharp focus, clear daylight, fine detail”.
  7. Upscale the keeper, not every take. Pick the best clip, then run it through the Video Upscaler. Proteus targets 1080p or 4K and also removes noise, compression blocks and soft faces.
  8. Protect the file when you share it. Download the original, not a preview. Social apps re-compress uploads, so post at 1080p and switch on HD upload where the app offers it.

Which upscaler should I use for AI video?

EngineOutputClip lengthPriceBest for
Topaz Proteus1080p or 4KUp to 60 sFrom 4 credits a job; 10 s 720p to 1080p = 7AI clips, soft faces, noise and compression clean-up
Topaz Video Upscale1x, 2x or 4xUp to 10 min3.2 credits/s (5.6 at 4x), min 30Longer videos and edits

Proteus is priced by the amount of video it processes, so short AI clips are cheap. The exact price is calculated from your file before you start. For older footage such as VHS or phone clips, see the full AI video upscaling guide.

How to upscale an AI video to 4K

  1. Open the Video Upscaler and upload your clip (Proteus takes up to 60 seconds and 500 MB).
  2. Choose Topaz Proteus and the 4K target, or Topaz Video Upscale at 4x for a longer file.
  3. Check the credit price shown for your clip, then start.
  4. Download the result from My Creations. Proteus keeps the original frame rate.

A tip: upscaling a 1080p render to 4K looks better than upscaling a 480p render to 4K. The upscaler has more real detail to work from.

What upscaling will not fix

  • Warped faces and hands. An upscaler sharpens what is there, including mistakes. Fix those with a re-render; see AI video hands and faces fix.
  • Flicker and morphing. Those are generation problems, covered in AI video flickering and morphing fix.
  • Heavy motion blur. Detail lost in a smear does not come back.
  • Garbled text. Sharper gibberish is still gibberish. Add text as an overlay instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a blurry AI video?

Re-render the final at 1080p instead of a draft resolution, start from a sharp source image, frame the subject closer and keep the motion moderate. Then upscale the best clip with Topaz Proteus to clean noise and sharpen faces.

How do I upscale an AI video to 4K?

Upload it to VdoBloom’s Video Upscaler and pick Topaz Proteus with the 4K target (clips up to 60 seconds) or Topaz Video Upscale at 4x (up to 10 minutes). The price is calculated from your clip and shown before you start.

How can I improve a low-resolution AI video?

If you still have the prompt, regenerating at a higher resolution beats any upscale. If you only have the file, upscale it with Proteus, which also reduces compression blocks and noise.

Why does my AI video look sharp on my computer but blurry on Instagram or TikTok?

The app re-compressed it. Upload the original 1080p file, not a forwarded or screen-recorded copy, and turn on the high-quality upload setting if the app has one.

Does image-to-video quality depend on the photo?

Yes, heavily. The model builds every frame from your photo, so a small, compressed or blurry image gives a soft video. Upscale the photo first if it is under about 1,000 pixels on the short side.

Can I upscale for free?

New accounts get 10 free credits, enough for a short Proteus job such as a 10-second 720p clip to 1080p at 7 credits. Free-tier downloads carry a watermark; any credit pack removes it, and one-time pack credits never expire.
