An AI headshot is a good deal when three things are true:

• You have at least one sharp, well-lit recent photo of yourself to start from.
• You need a professional-looking image, not a legal or official one.
• You are willing to generate several options and reject the ones that drift from your real face.

It is a poor choice when you need an image an authority will check against your face (passport, visa, ID card, some exam registrations), when your only source photos are blurry or group shots, or when you expect it to replace a photographer for a brand campaign with specific art direction.

What an AI headshot generator actually does

Most current generators do not "retouch" your photo. They generate a new image, using your photo as a reference for identity, and a style prompt for clothing, background, lighting and framing. That is why results can look polished and also why they can be slightly off: the face is re-drawn, not copied.

LinkedIn's rules

As of September 2026, LinkedIn's Professional Community Policies say not to use an image of someone else, or any image that is not your likeness, as a profile photo. Its profile photo guidance allows an illustration or other rendering of yourself, and LinkedIn can remove photos that are not you. An AI headshot that genuinely looks like you fits within that. One that changes your face, age or build enough to be a different-looking person does not match the intent of the rule.

The human reaction

We have no reliable data on how many recruiters spot AI headshots, and you should be skeptical of anyone quoting a precise percentage. What is predictable:

• The moment of truth is the first video call or interview. If your face matches the photo, nobody has a reason to care how it was made.
• Tell-tale signs that do get noticed: perfectly smooth skin, glossy "plastic" hair, earrings that do not match, mangled collars or buttons, a background that looks like a stock render, and a face that looks five years younger.
• In conservative fields, a slightly imperfect but honest photo is safer than a glossy one.

It also helps to think about where the photo appears. A small circular LinkedIn avatar hides most artifacts; a large hero image on a personal website or a printed conference badge shows every one of them. Check the image at the size it will actually be used, not just in the preview grid.

Practical rule: pick the output that looks most like you on an ordinary day, not the one that looks best.

The honest limits

Likeness drift

Every generator re-draws your face, so small changes creep in: eye spacing, nose width, jawline, teeth, skin tone under different lighting. Some outputs in a batch will be close; some will not. This is why good tools return several images per style. Throw out any image that a friend would pause at.

Not for passports, visas or ID

Official photos must show your real, unaltered face. The US State Department's passport photo guidance says photos must not be altered to change your appearance, including with AI tools, and rejected photos delay applications. Hands, accessories and text

Headshot framing hides most hands, but jewelry, glasses frames, lanyards and logos on clothing can come out warped. Crop, or pick a variation where they are clean.

Diversity of results

• Executive, press or speaker bios where the image will be printed large or scrutinized.
• Brand shoots that need a specific location, props or a team photo with consistent lighting.
• Industries or employers that ask for unedited photos.
• Anyone whose source photos are all low quality; a quick phone shot by a friend in daylight may do more than any AI tool.

A middle path works well for many people: take one decent photo yourself (a friend, a window, a plain wall, five minutes), use it as your main profile picture, and use AI headshots for the extra variations such as a casual version for a speaker bio or a warmer outdoor version for a personal site. That way your primary photo is unquestionably real, and the AI images are extras that still match it.

Consent: only your own face
