How to Animate Your Kid's Drawing With AI

Turn a photo of your child's crayon or marker drawing into a short animated video. Steps, six motion templates, credit costs and photo tips.

By VdoBloom Team

To animate your kid’s drawing with AI, take a flat, well-lit photo of the drawing, upload it to VdoBloom’s Animate a Drawing tool, pick a motion such as Wave Hello, Jump for Joy, Dance or Walk Across the Page, and generate. You get a short video, 5 seconds by default, in which the drawn characters move like a simple flip-book cartoon while the lines, colours and paper stay exactly as your child drew them. It runs in the browser with no app. The default setting (Seedance 2 Fast, 5 seconds, 720p, vertical) costs 50 credits; a 5-second clip on Seedance 2 Mini at 480p costs 8 credits, so the 10 free sign-up credits cover a first try.

Quick facts

  • Input: one photo of a drawing on paper (crayon, marker, pencil, paint).
  • Output: a short MP4, 5 seconds by default, vertical 9:16 for phones.
  • Motions: six templates (Wave Hello, Jump for Joy, Dance, Walk Across the Page, Fly or Swim, Come Alive) or your own description.
  • Style: the drawing is not redrawn or made realistic. It stays a drawing.
  • Cost: 8 credits (Seedance 2 Mini, 5 s, 480p) up to 50 credits (Seedance 2 Fast, 5 s, 720p, the default). The price shows before you generate.
  • Free start: 10 credits on sign-up, no card. Free downloads carry a watermark.

How do I animate my kid’s drawing with AI?

  1. Photograph the drawing. Lay it flat and shoot from straight above (tips below).
  2. Open Animate a Drawing and upload the photo where it says “Upload a Photo of the Drawing”.
  3. Pick a template or type how the drawing should move, for example “the cat chases its tail in a circle”.
  4. Choose the model and length. Leave the default for the smoothest motion, or switch to Seedance 2 Mini at 480p for a cheap first test.
  5. Generate. The video is saved in My Creations, ready to download and send to grandparents.

The uploaded photo becomes the first frame of the video. That is why the result looks like your child’s page coming to life rather than a new picture inspired by it.

How should I photograph the drawing?

The photo matters more than anything else. The AI can only move what it can see clearly.

  • Flat and square on. Hold the phone directly above the paper so the page is not a trapezoid. A slanted page makes the motion wobble.
  • Even daylight. Near a window, without the phone’s shadow across the page. Avoid flash, which leaves a bright glare spot.
  • Crop to the paper. Trim away the table, fingers and other clutter so the drawing fills the frame.
  • Bold lines win. Marker and crayon animate better than faint pencil. If the pencil is light, ask your child to go over the outline.
  • One main character helps. A clear figure in the middle of the page is easiest. A crowded scene still works, but the motion spreads across many small parts.

Which motion should I pick?

TemplateWhat happensBest for
Wave HelloThe main character lifts an arm and waves two or three times with a small bouncePeople, monsters, robots
Jump for JoyA crouch, a jump with arms up, a squash-and-stretch landing and a smileAny standing figure
DanceThe characters sway, swing their arms and tap their feet, then strike a poseDrawings with several people
Walk Across the PageBouncy steps from one side of the paper toward the other, same size and styleAnimals and people seen side-on
Fly or SwimA bird flaps and loops, a fish wiggles, a car or plane glides with drawn motion linesBirds, fish, cars, planes, rockets
Come AliveSoft breathing, blinking, a wider smile and a head tiltPortraits and family drawings

Prompt ideas if you write your own

Keep it to one simple action, and say what should stay still. A few that suit children’s drawings:

  • “The drawn sun smiles and its rays wiggle slowly. The house and trees stay still.”
  • “The dinosaur stomps two steps forward and roars with its mouth wide open.”
  • “The princess spins around once and her dress swirls.”
  • “The rocket shakes, then blasts off upward with drawn flames and leaves the page.”
  • “The family holds hands and swings their arms together.”

Asking your child what the character should do is half the fun. Their own idea, in their words, often makes the best prompt.

Will it keep my child’s drawing style?

That is the point of the tool. Every template tells the model to keep the exact drawing, the texture of the crayon or marker and the paper itself, and to move only the drawn figures. Nothing is turned into 3D or a realistic animal. The motion looks hand-made, like a flip-book.

AI video is not perfect, though. Sometimes a line drifts, an arm gets an extra stroke or the background shifts slightly. If that happens, run it again or try a different template. Simpler motions such as Come Alive or Wave Hello drift least.

If you would rather turn the drawing into a polished, finished illustration first, that is a different tool: Sketch to Image renders a sketch as a full picture, which you can then animate with Image to Video. Most parents prefer the original drawing, wobbly lines and all.

How much does it cost?

SettingsCredits per video
Seedance 2 Mini, 5 s, 480p8
Seedance 2 Mini, 5 s, 720p17
Seedance 2 Fast, 5 s, 480p24
Seedance 2 Fast, 5 s, 720p (default)50

You pay per video, with no subscription required. The Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, and one-time pack credits never expire, so a pack bought for one school project still works next term. In India, the Starter pack is 75 credits for ₹299. If a video fails, its credits are refunded.

What about privacy?

  • Upload the drawing, not the child. Crop out your child’s face, name tag and school details before uploading. The tool only needs the paper.
  • Videos are saved to your own My Creations library. Share them where and with whom you choose.
  • An adult should run the account. You confirm you have permission to use what you upload.

Ideas for using the animated drawing

  • A birthday message to a relative, starring the character your child drew for them.
  • A “year in drawings” reel: animate a few favourites and join them in the Timeline Editor.
  • Add a short song from the AI Music Generator as the soundtrack.
  • Print a still from the video as a card, with the moving version sent by message.

FAQ

How do I animate my kid’s drawing with AI?

Photograph the drawing flat in good light, upload it to Animate a Drawing on VdoBloom, choose a motion such as Wave Hello or Dance, and generate. You get a short video of the drawing moving while it keeps its own lines and colours. A 5-second clip costs 8 to 50 credits depending on model and resolution.

Does it change my child’s drawing?

No. The drawing is the first frame of the video and the model is told to keep the lines, colours and paper. Only the figures move. If something drifts, re-run it or pick another template.

Can I animate a drawing for free?

New accounts get 10 free credits. That covers one 5-second video on Seedance 2 Mini at 480p (8 credits). Free downloads carry a watermark.

Do I need an app?

No. It works in a phone or desktop browser. You can take the photo and upload it from the same phone.

What kind of drawing works best?

Bold crayon or marker on white paper, with one clear character in the middle. Faint pencil and very busy pages give weaker motion.
