How to Remove a Person From a Photo With AI

Remove a person from a photo by painting over them (FLUX Erase, 10 credits) or typing the change (from 3 credits). Steps, prompts and fixing leftovers.

By VdoBloom Team

To remove a person from a photo with AI, upload the photo to an AI photo editor and either paint over the person or type what to remove, for example "remove the man on the left". On VdoBloom's AI photo editor you can do both: FLUX Erase removes whatever you paint over and fills the gap to match the background for 10 credits, and prompt edits on models such as Nano Banana 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5 start at 3 credits at 1K. New accounts get 10 free credits, enough for one FLUX Erase or three 3-credit prompt edits. The AI fills the gap with a believable guess, not what was really behind the person.

Quick facts

  • Where: AI photo editor on VdoBloom, in the browser.
  • Paint to remove: FLUX Erase, 10 credits per edit. You brush over the person; no mask file needed.
  • Type to remove: prompt edits from 3 credits (Nano Banana 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5 at 1K), 4 credits on Seedream 5 Flash, 1 credit on Muse Image.
  • Paint and describe: Qwen Image 2.1 mask mode changes only the painted area, 3 credits at 1K or 5 at 2K.
  • File limit: 10 MB per image.
  • Free start: 10 free credits for new accounts. One-time credit packs never expire.
  • Limit: the background behind the person is invented, so text, patterns and faces nearby can need a second pass.

How do I remove a person from a photo with AI?

There are two ways, and the right one depends on the photo.

MethodBest whenCredits
Paint over the person (FLUX Erase)You want exact control of what disappears; crowded scenes; small figures in the background10
Type the change (prompt edit)The person is easy to describe ("the woman in the red coat"); you also want other changesFrom 3
Paint, then describe (Qwen Image 2.1 mask mode)You want to replace the person with something specific, like a bench or more sand3 at 1K, 5 at 2K

Method 1: paint over the person with FLUX Erase

  1. Open the AI photo editor and choose FLUX Erase as the model.
  2. Upload the photo.
  3. Paint over the person with the brush. Cover the whole body, including hair, hands, bags and the shadow on the ground.
  4. Generate. FLUX Erase removes the painted area and fills it to match the surroundings.
  5. Download the result, or paint again over any leftover.

Paint a little wider than the person. A tight outline often leaves a faint edge or "ghost" of the body. A full guide is in how to use FLUX Erase.

Method 2: remove a person by prompt

  1. Open the AI photo editor and pick an editing model, for example Nano Banana 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5.
  2. Upload the photo.
  3. Type a short instruction that says who to remove and what should be there instead.
  4. Check the credit price on the generate button, then generate.

Good prompts name the person by position and clothing and say what the gap becomes:

  • "Remove the man in the blue shirt on the left. Fill the space with the same beach and sea."
  • "Remove the person walking in the background behind the couple. Keep the couple exactly as they are."
  • "Remove everyone except the woman in the centre. Keep the street and buildings."

Adding "keep everything else the same" helps, because some models otherwise restyle the whole picture.

How do I edit a photo by just describing the change?

The same prompt editor handles almost any change, not just removing people. Upload the photo, type what should change in one or two sentences, and the AI returns an edited copy that keeps the rest of the picture. Here are prompts that work well:

You wantExample prompt
Remove an objectRemove the coffee cup from the table. Keep the table surface.
Change the backgroundReplace the background with a beach at sunset. Keep the person unchanged.
Change a colourMake the jacket dark red. Keep the same fabric and folds.
Fix the skyReplace the grey sky with a clear blue sky with a few clouds.
Change the lightMake it look like warm golden-hour light from the right.
Add somethingAdd a small potted plant on the windowsill.
RestyleTurn this photo into a watercolour painting.

One change per edit gives the cleanest results. If you need several changes, do them one after another on the edited image. For background-only jobs, the background remover makes a clean cut-out, and relight photo is built for lighting changes.

Which model should I use?

ModelHow it editsCredits
FLUX EraseRemoves what you paint10
Qwen Image 2.1 (mask mode)Changes only the painted area, guided by your text3 at 1K, 5 at 2K
Nano Banana 2.1Prompt edit3 at 1K, 4 at 2K, 6 at 4K
GPT Image 2.5Prompt edit3 at 1K, 5 at 2K, 8 at 4K
Seedream 5 FlashPrompt edit4
Muse ImagePrompt edit1

Start with FLUX Erase when the person is hard to describe or when there are several people close together. Start with a prompt model when the person is clearly separate and easy to name. The editor has 41 models in total, and the price for each one shows before you generate.

How do I fix leftovers like shadows, reflections and edges?

  • Shadows: the most common leftover. Paint over the shadow too, or add "and their shadow" to the prompt.
  • Reflections: in windows, mirrors and water, the person may appear twice. Remove the reflection in a second pass.
  • Ghost edges: paint wider than the outline and run FLUX Erase again on the faint area.
  • Warped patterns: tiles, fences and text behind the person are invented, so lines may not match. Paint a slightly larger area so the fill has more to match, or try a different model.
  • Touching people: if the person you remove was hugging or holding someone, that person's arm or shoulder may need fixing. Describe it: "fix the woman's left arm so it rests at her side".

What AI person removal cannot do

The AI does not know what was really behind the person; it paints a likely background. That is fine for sand, grass, sky and walls, and harder for detailed scenes. Very large removals, such as a person filling half the frame, leave a lot to invent and may look less natural. Edits can also slightly change nearby details, so compare the result with the original before you share it. Only edit photos you have the right to use, and do not use person removal to mislead people about where someone was.

What does it cost?

You pay per edit. FLUX Erase is 10 credits and prompt edits start at 3 credits on Nano Banana 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5 at 1K. New accounts get 10 free credits. After that, the Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 as a one-time payment, which covers 30 FLUX Erase edits or 100 edits at 3 credits. One-time credits never expire, and a failed edit is refunded automatically. Packs are on the pricing page.

FAQ

How do I remove a person from a photo with AI?

Upload the photo to VdoBloom's AI photo editor, then paint over the person with FLUX Erase (10 credits) or type an instruction such as "remove the man on the left" on a prompt model (from 3 credits). The AI fills the gap to match the background.

How do I edit a photo by just describing the change?

Upload the photo to the AI photo editor, type the change in one or two sentences, such as "replace the background with a beach at sunset", and generate. Edits start at 1 credit, and the rest of the photo stays the same.

Can I remove a person from a photo for free?

Once or a few times. The 10 free signup credits cover one FLUX Erase edit or three 3-credit prompt edits.

Why is there still a shadow where the person was?

The shadow was not in the painted area or the prompt. Paint over it too, or add "and their shadow" to the instruction, and run it again.

Can I remove several people at once?

Yes. Paint over all of them with FLUX Erase, or write "remove everyone except the woman in the centre". Crowded scenes usually work better with painting than with a prompt.
