AI Photo Edit Changed My Face? How to Keep It the Same

Why AI photo editors change your face when you only asked to change the background or outfit, and 7 fixes to keep the same face, with real credit costs.

By VdoBloom Team

An AI photo editor changes your face because most edit models redraw the whole image, not just the part you asked about. Small faces, low-resolution photos, beauty words in the prompt and big edits (new pose, new angle, new lighting) make it worse. To keep the same face, say "keep her face, features and expression exactly the same" in the prompt, change one thing per edit, start from a sharp photo where the face is large, and use a model that holds identity well. On VdoBloom's AI Photo Editor, edits start at 3 credits (Nano Banana 2.1 at 1K) and new accounts get 10 free credits.

Quick facts

  • Edit models regenerate the whole picture, so even a background edit can subtly redraw the face.
  • Prices on the AI Photo Editor: Nano Banana 2.1 is 3, 4 or 6 credits (1K, 2K, 4K); Flux Kontext Pro 7; Seedream 4.5 Edit 7; Flux Kontext Max 10; Nano Banana Pro 18 credits.
  • Face Swap is a separate tool at 10 credits for when you want a specific face placed onto a photo.
  • Each run costs credits, so trying the same edit on two models usually costs under 15 credits.
  • Consent: edit only photos of yourself or people who agreed.

Why did the AI change my face?

  1. The whole image is redrawn. Unlike a Photoshop layer, an edit model paints a new picture that resembles the old one. Faces are where small differences show most.
  2. The face is small or blurry. If the face is only a small part of the photo, the model has few pixels to copy and fills in a "typical" face.
  3. Beauty words in the prompt. "Beautiful", "flawless", "model", "perfect skin" tell the model to change the face toward its idea of attractive.
  4. The edit is too big. New pose, new camera angle, new lighting or a full restyle (anime, oil painting) all force the face to be redrawn from a new direction.
  5. Too many edits stacked. Each round drifts a little. After four or five edits on top of each other, the face is someone else.
  6. The model is weaker at identity. Some models follow instructions well but treat faces loosely; others are better at keeping a person recognisable.

How to keep the same face: 7 fixes

1. Tell it to keep the face

Add a clear lock line: "Keep the person's face, facial features, skin tone, hairline and expression exactly the same. Only change the background." Name what must stay and what may change.

2. Change one thing per edit

Background first. Download. Then outfit, starting from the new image. One clear edit per run drifts much less than three at once.

3. Start from the original, not the last edit

If the face has drifted, go back to the original photo for the next edit instead of editing an edit.

4. Use a sharp photo with a large face

Crop closer so the face fills more of the frame, or upscale a soft photo first with the Image Upscaler. Even, front-facing light helps.

5. Remove beauty and style words

Delete "beautiful", "flawless", "glamorous", "perfect". Say "natural skin texture, same face" if you want it realistic.

6. Try another edit model

Run the same photo and prompt on two models and keep the one that looks like you. Nano Banana 2.1 at 3 credits is a cheap first try; Seedream 4.5 Edit and Flux Kontext Pro are 7 each.

7. Put the face back with Face Swap

If the edit is perfect except the face, use Face Swap (10 credits) with your original photo as the face source to restore your own face onto the edited image. Use it only with your own face or with permission.

FAQ

Why does AI change my face when editing a photo?

Edit models redraw the whole image, so the face is regenerated too. Small faces, beauty words and big edits make the change more obvious.

How do I edit a photo with AI without changing the face?

Add "keep the face exactly the same, only change X" to the prompt, change one thing per edit, start from a sharp photo where the face is large, and try a second model if it still drifts.

Why does the AI make me look like a different person?

Usually because the face is small in the photo, the edit changed pose or style, or several edits were stacked on top of each other.

Which AI photo editor keeps faces the most consistent?

It varies by photo. Run the same edit on two models (for example Nano Banana 2.1 at 3 credits and Seedream 4.5 Edit at 7) and keep the one that looks most like you.

Can I fix a face that the AI already changed?

Yes. Use Face Swap with your original photo as the source face, or redo the edit from the original image with a face-lock line.

Does it cost extra to retry an edit?

Each run is charged at that model's price. Failed runs are refunded automatically; finished edits are not.
