What Are the Best AI Video Generation APIs in 2026?
Compare AI video APIs by models, pricing style, webhooks, rate limits and reliability: direct provider APIs versus a multi-model API with credits and refunds.
The best AI video API for a project in 2026 is the one that offers the model you need, a billing model you can forecast, and a job system you can operate. A direct provider API gives you one family of models and the provider’s own commercial terms; a multi-model API gives you several families behind one key. VdoBloom’s API is the second kind: one balance of purchased credits that never expire, the same prices as the app, and a job plus webhook system for clips that take one to ten minutes.

Disclosure: VdoBloom is our platform.
This comparison is by job-to-be-done. Direct providers are described generically, because their terms change and the only reliable source is their own documentation. Where a provider fact cannot be checked here, check their site rather than trust someone else’s table.
What to compare: models, pricing model, webhooks, rate limits
Four things decide whether an API is workable.
- Model coverage. One provider may have the best model for a talking shot and nothing for a 30-second take. A multi-model API lets a job route to the model that fits, at the cost of learning one platform’s conventions.
- Pricing model. Per-second billing is easy to predict for a fixed shot length. Credit pricing is easy to budget as a balance. Neither is inherently better; what matters is whether you can forecast a month before you spend it.
- Webhooks. Video generation is slow. Polling every job is work you have to write and operate; a signed webhook turns completion into an event. An API without webhooks is usable, but you own the polling loop.
- Rate limits and failure behaviour. What happens at the limit, and what happens when a job fails, decides whether a production workflow is calm or noisy.
Direct provider APIs
A direct provider API is the model owner’s own endpoint. ByteDance, Google and Kuaishou each run their own platform for their video models, and the usual arrangement is an account with that provider, a key issued by them, and billing in their currency and their unit. The advantage is proximity: a new model typically appears there first, and the docs are the source of truth.
The cost is concentration: a workflow inherits that provider’s roadmap, rate limits and terms. If the model you built around is retired or repriced, the integration changes with it. Check each provider’s current docs, rate limits, regional availability and commercial terms directly; those are exactly the facts a third-party comparison gets wrong six weeks after publication.
There is also friction that rarely appears in a feature table: separate accounts, keys, invoices and balance monitoring for each provider. For a product that offers several looks, that is one integration per look.
Multi-model APIs, and where the VdoBloom API fits
A multi-model API puts several providers behind one key and one balance: the same request shape, with the model chosen by id. The trade is dependence on the aggregator’s coverage.
The VdoBloom API was released on 2026-09-28 and is documented at /developers/. The base URL is https://vdobloom.com/api/v1. Keys are created in Settings, Developer; a key starts with vdb_, is shown once, is stored hashed, and can be revoked there. A key cannot create or revoke other keys. Authentication is a bearer token in the authorization header.
The endpoints cover the generation jobs most products need: list models with credit prices, generate images, edit or combine one to ten images, generate a video from text or an image URL, poll a job, list creations and read a balance. Example model ids include bytedance/seedance-2-fast, google/nano-banana, nano-banana-pro and auto-image-edit. Prices are the same as in the app and are returned by the models endpoint, so a client can quote before it spends.
What the API and its MCP server do not cover matters too: effects, lip-sync and avatars, UGC and ad tools, and timeline editing are dashboard features.
Pricing style: credits versus per-second
| Criterion | Direct provider API | Multi-model API (VdoBloom) |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | The provider’s own billing unit | Credits |
| Forecasting | Per provider, per model | One balance across models |
| Expiry | Set by the provider | Purchased credits never expire |
| Price discovery | Provider docs and console | GET /models returns live credit prices |
Credits and per-second billing answer different questions. Per-second asks “how long is the clip?” and multiplies. Credits ask “what is this job worth?” and deducts. On VdoBloom the two meet: a per-second model still shows a credit total before the job runs. For example, a 5-second 720p Seedance 2 Fast video is 50 credits, and the job record carries its own credit cost.
Do not compare a per-second rate with a credit price without converting through a specific job. The only fair comparison is two quotes for the same model, the same length and the same resolution. Model pages such as Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 Fast list the settings and the shape of the price; the exact figure for a job is returned by the API.
Reliability features: idempotency keys and automatic refunds
Video jobs fail, and a retry that charges twice is worse than a failure. Two mechanisms decide whether a production integration is safe.
An idempotency key makes a retry safe. On VdoBloom you send an Idempotency-Key header on a generation call; repeating the request with the same key returns the original job instead of charging again. Reusing a key for a different request is refused with a 422, which is the correct answer: the key is bound to one request, not one customer.
Automatic refunds make a failure cheap. A failed generation is refunded on VdoBloom without a support ticket. Combined with the idempotency key, the pattern is: send once with a key, retry the same call on a network error, and trust the refund on a content or provider failure.
Images can be held for up to about two minutes with wait: true, or returned as a job immediately. Videos return a job at once because they take one to ten minutes; poll every 20 to 60 seconds or use a webhook. Webhook events carry an X-VdoBloom-Signature header with a timestamp and an HMAC-SHA256 hex digest of the timestamp and the raw body, plus an X-VdoBloom-Event header. Verify the signature, compare in constant time, reject old timestamps, and answer with any 2xx. Non-2xx responses are retried after 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour and 6 hours, with the same event id each time, so duplicate handling is a simple event-id check.
Rate limits are explicit: 120 requests or 20 generations per minute per account, across all keys. Error codes are enumerable and actionable, from 400 invalid_request and 401 unauthorized through 402 insufficient_credits and 429 rate_limited. A 5xx means retry with the same idempotency key. The quickstart is at the API quickstart.
Pick by job
- One model, one workflow. A direct provider API is a reasonable fit if the model is stable and the integration is small. Check its docs for rate limits and terms.
- Several looks behind one key. A multi-model API avoids one integration per provider and one balance to monitor per account.
- A chat-driven workflow. An MCP server is the shortest path. VdoBloom’s MCP server is at
https://vdobloom.com/mcpand is added as a custom connector in Claude or ChatGPT, with a sign-in instead of a pasted key. - Effects, avatars, UGC ads or timeline editing. These are dashboard jobs, not API jobs, on VdoBloom. Do not design an API workflow around them.
For the model side, the best AI video generators of 2026 is a better starting point than an API feature list. For billing, AI video credits explained covers how a balance is spent.
Frequently asked questions
Does VdoBloom have an API?
Yes, released 2026-09-28. The base URL is https://vdobloom.com/api/v1, with a bearer key created in Settings, Developer. The same credits and prices apply as in the app.
Does the API have webhooks?
Yes. Add a webhook URL to a key, and completion posts a signed job.completed event. Failed deliveries are retried on a fixed schedule with the same event id.
How are failed jobs handled?
A failed generation is refunded automatically. Send an Idempotency-Key on generation calls so a retry cannot charge twice.
Can I use the API for effects or lip-sync?
No. Effects, lip-sync, avatars, UGC and ad tools, and timeline editing are dashboard features and are not exposed in the API.
Do credits bought for the API expire?
No. Credits you buy never expire, and there is no separate API plan. Prices are on the pricing page.
Start at the developer page: create a key, call the models endpoint for live prices, and run one image job before a video job. New accounts start with 10 free credits and no card, and credits bought in packs never expire, so the first integration test does not commit you to a monthly plan.
