FLUX Outpainting costs 12 credits per run on VdoBloom — $0.60 at the Lite plan rate of $0.05 per credit, or about $0.29 per run on an annual Pro plan — and that price is flat no matter how much canvas you add. Expanding an image by 64 pixels on one edge bills exactly the same as pushing all four edges out by the maximum 512 pixels. That single fact should change how you use the model: every expansion you can foresee belongs in one job, not spread across four.

What you are paying for

FLUX Outpainting is Black Forest Labs’ canvas-expansion model, running on VdoBloom through Runware as the model id bfl:flux@outpainting. It takes one source image and four numbers — how many pixels to add at the top, right, bottom and left — and paints plausible new image into the space it created. It is not a prompt-driven model. There is no text box that steers the result; the extension is inferred entirely from the pixels you gave it. At least one of the four directions has to be greater than zero or the job is rejected before it bills anything.

Each side accepts 0 to 512 pixels, and the default is 64 on every side if you leave the controls alone. Maxing all four gives you an extra 1,024 pixels of width and 1,024 of height around the original frame in a single 12-credit run. The flat fee changes the workflow

The cheapest version is also usually the best-looking one. Every additional pass feeds the model its own generated pixels as the new source, and small errors in texture, lighting and perspective compound with each round. Decide the final canvas first, enter all four numbers, run once.

When you need more than 512 pixels on a side, you have no choice but to chain runs, and the price is linear: 24 credits for two passes, 36 for three. That is the point at which it is worth asking whether generating the image at the target aspect ratio from the start would be cheaper. That last row is the genuine alternative to buying an outpaint at all. If you are expanding an image purely to hit a banner or skyscraper format and you still have the ability to regenerate from scratch, a model that renders those ratios natively skips the whole problem. Outpainting earns its 12 credits when the source is fixed — a photograph, a client-supplied asset, a frame you cannot recreate. Extending a photo of a real person is fine, but you still need that person’s consent before you publish work built from their likeness.

Spending less on outpainting

  • Measure the target canvas before you start. Work out the exact pixel deltas for the format you need, enter all four, run once. Guessing costs 12 credits a guess.
  • Do not outpaint what you can crop. Going from 16:9 to 1:1 is a free crop, not a 12-credit expansion. Outpainting is only for adding.
  • Upscale after, not before. Expanding a smaller image and then upscaling the result costs less total inference than expanding an already-huge frame, and the per-side 512 limit goes further on a smaller source.
  • Check the seam at full zoom before the second pass. If run one produced a soft edge, chaining a second run onto it bakes the softness in permanently.

Failed runs and refunds

Credits are deducted before the job goes to the provider and automatically refunded if it fails or the provider rejects it, so an error does not cost you the 12 credits.
