Midjourney vs DALL-E 3 vs Stable Diffusion (2026): Which AI Image Generator to Use

Midjourney vs DALL-E 3 vs Stable Diffusion in 2026: what each is best at, how DALL-E 3 became GPT Image, a side-by-side table and which to pick. Updated 31 October 2026.

By VdoBloom Team

Short answer: Midjourney is the pick for stylised, art-directed images; DALL-E 3 is the easiest to prompt in plain English but OpenAI has since moved ChatGPT to its newer GPT Image models, so in 2026 the realistic "DALL-E" choice is GPT Image; Stable Diffusion is the pick when you want open weights you can run, fine-tune and control on your own hardware. None of the three is best at everything, which is why many creators use more than one.

Disclosure: VdoBloom is our platform. VdoBloom does not run Midjourney, DALL-E 3 or Stable Diffusion; where we mention VdoBloom models it is as an alternative, and we say so when a competitor is the better pick.

What changed since the old comparisons

Most "Midjourney vs DALL-E vs Stable Diffusion" articles were written in 2023 and compare Midjourney V5, DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion 1.5. All three have moved on:

  • Midjourney is on its V7-generation models, with a web app alongside Discord, personalisation profiles, an Editor and image-to-video animation of your own stills.
  • DALL-E 3 was the model inside ChatGPT from late 2023. OpenAI then replaced it in ChatGPT with natively multimodal GPT Image models, which follow instructions and render text more reliably. DALL-E 3 is now the older option.
  • Stable Diffusion moved through SDXL to Stable Diffusion 3.5, and the open-weights scene around it (community fine-tunes, LoRAs, ControlNet, ComfyUI workflows) is still the main draw. Other open models such as FLUX now compete in the same space.

Midjourney: when looks matter most

Midjourney still has the most recognisable "finished" look of the three: lighting, colour and composition that read as art-directed with very little prompting. It is the default for concept art, mood boards, illustration and stylised portraits. The trade-offs are a subscription with no free tier, a PG-13 content line (see what Midjourney blocks), and less precise control when you need an exact layout or literal instructions followed.

DALL-E 3 and GPT Image: when you want to just describe it

DALL-E 3's strength was that you could write a normal sentence and get roughly what you asked for, with ChatGPT rewriting the prompt for you. GPT Image keeps that ease and adds better text rendering and conversational editing ("make the sky darker, keep everything else"). It is the easiest starting point for beginners, presentations, simple marketing graphics and anything with words in it. It is less suited to a strong house style or heavy customisation.

Stable Diffusion: when you want control

Stable Diffusion is the only one of the three you can download and run yourself. That brings fine-tuning on your own characters or products, LoRAs for styles, ControlNet for poses and depth, inpainting, and no per-image fee once your hardware is paid for. The cost is time: installs, model choice and node-based workflows take real effort, and quality depends heavily on which checkpoint and settings you use. Licence terms differ between versions, so read the licence for the exact model you download.

Which should you pick?

  • Concept art, illustration, mood boards: Midjourney.
  • Beginner, plain-English prompts, posters with text: GPT Image (the successor to DALL-E 3).
  • Your own style or character, local control, no per-image fee: Stable Diffusion.
  • Images that will become video: any of the three for the still, then an image-to-video model.

If you want several models in one place

VdoBloom does not offer these three, but its AI image generator runs comparable modern models on one credit balance, and the same credits drive video. Per-image prices at default settings:

Frequently asked questions

Is Midjourney better than DALL-E 3?

For stylised, artistic images, usually yes. For following a long literal prompt or putting readable text in an image, DALL-E 3 and especially its successor GPT Image tend to do better.

Is DALL-E 3 still available in 2026?

OpenAI replaced DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT with its GPT Image models. Check OpenAI's own documentation for the current status of DALL-E 3 in the API; for new work, GPT Image is the model OpenAI points people to.

Is Stable Diffusion free?

The model weights can be downloaded at no cost, but you need a capable GPU or a paid host to run them, and each version has its own licence terms.

Which is best for beginners?

GPT Image inside ChatGPT, because you describe what you want in ordinary language. Midjourney is next; Stable Diffusion has the steepest learning curve.

Which is best for consistent characters?

Stable Diffusion with a fine-tune or LoRA gives the most control. Midjourney's character and style references are the easier option.
