YouTube Banner Size: The One Size You Need (and How to Make It)

YouTube banner size explained: 2560x1440 with a 1546x423 safe area, plus how to make 16:9 banner or thumbnail art with AI on VdoBloom.

By VdoBloom Team

The one YouTube banner size you need is 2560x1440 pixels — a 16:9 image, no bigger than 6 MB — with all of your text and logo inside a centred safe area of 1546x423 pixels, because that is the part every device shows. On mobile the banner is cropped to roughly a wide strip and on desktop to a shorter one, so anything outside the safe area gets cut. VdoBloom’s thumbnail maker at /dashboard/images/youtube-thumbnail-maker/ generates 16:9 artwork from your face and title, which you can scale to the banner size.

Why 2560x1440 and not something simpler

YouTube asks for a large banner because the same image has to look correct on a television, a laptop and a phone. On a TV the full frame is visible. On desktop, YouTube crops the image to a wide horizontal band and centres it. On mobile, the crop is narrower still and the profile picture and channel name sit over the left and bottom. The 2560x1440 recommendation exists so that the safe area survives all three crops at a decent resolution.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive: most of the canvas is throwaway. You are designing a 1546x423 rectangle and then supplying generous margins around it. Put the channel name, the upload schedule or a social handle in the corners and it will disappear on at least one device.

The safe area is a rectangle in the middle of the image: 1546 pixels wide by 423 pixels tall, centred both horizontally and vertically. Everything a viewer must read goes in there. The surrounding canvas is for background, pattern, texture and colour — things that can be cropped without losing meaning.

The 6 MB ceiling catches people out because it is generous for a photograph and tight for a graphic. A flat-colour design as a PNG will usually sit well under it; a photographic banner with soft gradients is better exported as a high-quality JPG. Keep the source file in PNG while you work so text edges and flat colour stay clean, and export to JPG only at the end if the size demands it.

Channel art is only one of four image slots, and they have different jobs and different specifications.

Both the banner and the thumbnail are 16:9, which is convenient: one 16:9 design can be reworked into the other rather than redrawn. The banner is composed for a wide, thin crop with a small safe area; the thumbnail is composed for a small rectangle in a crowded feed, where one subject, one readable phrase and strong contrast do the work.

How to make a banner with AI

VdoBloom’s thumbnail maker is built to produce 16:9 artwork from a face and a title, which is exactly the material a banner needs. It is worth being precise about what it does: it outputs thumbnail concepts at 16:9, not a pre-formatted 2560x1440 banner, so you scale the result up to the banner dimensions afterwards.

  1. Open the thumbnail maker and upload a clear photo of your face, or pick a frame from one of your videos. Your face, skin tone and features are kept from the photo; only the expression changes.
  2. Type the title and the topic. The title field holds up to 60 characters and is reproduced character for character, so keep it short — a channel banner rarely needs more than two or three words plus a handle. The topic field takes up to 160 characters and describes what the channel or video is about.
  3. Choose a style, and choose how many variants. You can generate three concepts, or four if you want a spare, and each one uses a different layout: face right with stacked text on the left, a pointing pose with a highlighted keyword, a small figure in a scene under one big headline, or a split screen with a title band.
  4. Generate and download all. The variants come back side by side with a single download button. On GPT Image 2.5 that is 5 credits per image, so 15 credits for three.
  5. Scale the winner to 2560x1440 and place your text inside the central 1546x423 safe area. Because the source is already 16:9, the proportions transfer without a redesign.
  6. Check it at three sizes. Preview the banner as a wide desktop strip, as a mobile crop, and full frame, and make sure nothing readable falls outside the safe area in any of them.

One small detail the tool already handles: it keeps the bottom-right corner of the artwork free of text, because the video-length badge sits there on a thumbnail. That habit is worth keeping in the banner too, where the bottom-right region is the first to be cropped on smaller screens.

Common mistakes

  • Putting text in the corners. The most common banner error. Anything outside the central safe area is invisible on mobile, where most viewers will see it.
  • Sending a file that is too big. The upload limit is 6 MB, and a 2560x1440 PNG of a photographic image can exceed it. Export as JPG when the artwork is photographic.
  • Designing a poster instead of a banner. A banner is a backdrop. Busy compositions compete with the channel name and the profile picture sitting on top of them.
  • Ignoring the profile picture. It overlaps the banner on every device. Leave quiet space where it will land.
  • Reusing the thumbnail at banner size. Both are 16:9, but a thumbnail is designed to be read at 320 pixels wide and a banner at full width. Scale the design, not the text size.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube banner be?

2560x1440 pixels, 16:9, under 6 MB, with all text and logos inside the central 1546x423 pixel safe area. 2048x1152 is the minimum accepted size, but designing at the recommended size avoids a soft banner on large screens.

What is the YouTube banner safe area?

A centred rectangle of 1546x423 pixels. Because YouTube crops the banner differently on a TV, a desktop browser and a phone, only that central region is reliably visible on every device. Treat everything outside it as background.

Can I use the VdoBloom thumbnail maker for a banner?

Yes, with one caveat: it generates 16:9 thumbnail concepts rather than a pre-sized 2560x1440 banner file. Use it for the artwork and the layout, then scale the export to the banner dimensions and keep your text inside the safe area.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

1280x720 pixels, 16:9, up to 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF. It is the same aspect ratio as the banner, so the same design can be adapted for both.

How much does it cost to make thumbnails or banner art on VdoBloom?

On GPT Image 2.5 the thumbnail maker costs 5 credits per image, so three variants are 15 credits and four are 20; Nano Banana Pro is the other model offered for the same tool. New accounts start with 10 free credits and no card, and the cost is shown before every generation. Paid output has no watermark and comes with commercial rights.

Open the YouTube thumbnail maker, upload a face photo, type a short title and your topic, and generate three 16:9 concepts — then take the strongest one up to 2560x1440 and place the text inside the 1546x423 safe area. Whether YouTube penalises AI thumbnails answers the policy question, poster and flyer design covers the wider set of channel graphics, the Shorts aspect ratio guide handles the vertical side, and GPT Image 2.5 is the model behind the maker if you want to see how its pricing tiers work. Plans and credit packs are on the pricing page.
