How to Make a Comic with AI, Step by Step

Make a comic with AI: write the story, lock the characters, draw lettered pages, then animate a panel. Costs per page in credits, styles, and the limits.

By VdoBloom Team

To make a comic with AI, write a short story, let the AI design each character once, then have it draw whole pages from that story with the same faces in every panel, and set your dialogue into the speech bubbles. On VdoBloom's AI Manga Generator, which also makes Western comics and webtoons, a character sheet costs 5 or 6 credits and a standard page costs 5 credits. A one-character, one-page comic from your selfie is about 10 credits, which is what a new account gets free. Each run takes a story of up to 1,500 words and draws up to 4 pages.

Quick facts

  • Formats: comic pages (left to right), manga pages (right to left), a vertical webtoon strip, or 4 to 8 loose square panels.
  • Styles: nine, including American comic, 90s American comic, Franco-Belgian, Classic manga, Shōjo, Noir, Webtoon, Hand-painted anime and Chibi.
  • Pages: up to 4 per run, each with 3 to 6 panels from nine layout templates.
  • Characters: up to 4 per story, each with a reference sheet; up to 5 of your own photos can lock faces.
  • Lettering: dialogue in 24 languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Arabic and Japanese, set into the bubbles with real fonts.
  • Export: PDF, CBZ for comic reader apps, a share poster, or webtoon slices. Exports and text edits are free.
  • Price: 5 credits per standard page, 18 per Pro page, 3 per webtoon panel. Failed pages are refunded.

Step 1: Write the story as scenes

The story you paste is the script, so write it the way a comic reads: short scenes, each with one clear action and at most one short line of dialogue. "Maya opens the attic door. Dust everywhere. She whispers: 'Grandpa was right.'" gives the AI a panel. A paragraph of description without action does not.

No story yet? Switch to Star in it: upload one or two selfies, name the heroes, write a one-line premise, and the AI writes the story around you.

Step 2: Keep the characters consistent

Consistency is where most AI comics fall apart. If each panel is a separate image prompt, the hero's face, hair and outfit change from panel to panel. The fix is a character sheet: one reference image per character, drawn before any page, that every page is then given as a reference.

  • From a description: 6 credits per character. Describe each the same way every time: hair, outfit and one distinctive detail, such as "red scarf" or "scar over the left eyebrow".
  • From a photo: 5 credits per character. Use a clear, front-facing photo for anyone whose face must match, and only photos of people who agreed to it.
  • Need a sheet on its own? The AI Character Sheet Generator makes turnaround sheets you can reuse across projects.

Sheets keep faces strong but not perfect. Small accessories can drift; redrawing that page usually fixes it. For long series, our guide to consistent AI characters across episodes goes deeper.

Step 3: Choose the layout and style

Pick the format first. Comic pages read left to right, manga pages right to left, and webtoons are one tall strip of 9:16 panels meant for phone scrolling. Loose panels are square, handy for an Instagram carousel or a storyboard.

Then pick the style. The AI picks a panel-layout template for the number of panels you want and draws each page in one pass from it, so frames sit where the layout says and the reading order is correct.

Step 4: Draw the pages

Choose the engine. Standard (GPT Image 2.5 at 2K, 5 credits a page) is the right start. Pro (Nano Banana Pro at 2K, 18 credits a page) gives a different rendering when you want more polish for a page you will publish. Draw one page first, check the characters, then draw the rest. Any single page can be redrawn for its own price.

Step 5: Add speech bubbles and text

Image models often misspell words, especially in Hindi, Tamil, Arabic and other non-Latin scripts. With exact lettering, the AI draws empty bubbles and your dialogue is set into them afterwards with proper fonts. You can then edit any line for free without redrawing the page. With model lettering, the image model writes the words itself, which can look more hand-drawn but may slip on spelling. Use exact lettering for anything you plan to share.

Step 6: Export, or turn a panel into video

Download a PDF, a CBZ for comic reader apps, a single share poster, or a ZIP of webtoon slices. To bring one panel to life, upload it to Comic to Video, which animates it in its own art style with motion like parallax depth, speed lines and camera pans, from 7 credits for a 4-second 480p clip. How much does an AI comic cost per page?

You pay only for the drawing steps. Story breakdown, layout, lettering edits and exports cost nothing.

New accounts get 10 free credits. After that, the Lite pack is 300 credits for $19.50 one-time, or 75 credits for ₹299 in India. One-time pack credits never expire and there is no subscription required.

What AI comic tools can't do yet

  • Length per run: up to 1,500 words, 4 pages and 4 characters. Plan longer stories as chapters that reuse the same character photos or descriptions.
  • No free-form panel editor: you cannot drag or resize frames; layouts come from the templates.
  • Not fully consistent: faces hold well, small props can drift.
  • Content rules apply: stories and uploads must follow the content policy, and only upload photos of people who have agreed to appear.

Tips for a better first comic

  • Keep dialogue to one short line per panel. Long speeches do not fit a bubble.
  • Give every scene a place: "on the rooftop at night" helps the background stay consistent.
  • Upload up to three setting photos if the location matters, such as your street or school.
  • End each page on a small hook, so readers turn to the next one.

FAQ

How do I make a comic with AI?

Write a short story in scenes, let the AI create a character sheet for each character, choose comic pages and a style, and draw the pages. On VdoBloom's AI Manga Generator it costs about 5 credits per page plus 5 or 6 per character, with your dialogue set into the bubbles exactly as typed. Then export a PDF or CBZ.

Can I make a comic with myself as the main character?

Yes. Use Star in it: upload a selfie, write a one-line premise, and the AI writes and draws the story with you as the hero. One page with one hero is about 10 credits.

Can the AI write comic dialogue in Hindi or Tamil?

Yes. Dialogue can be written in 24 languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi. Use exact lettering so the words are set with real fonts instead of drawn by the model.

Can I turn my AI comic into a video?

Yes. Upload a finished panel to Comic to Video to animate it in the same art style, from 7 credits for a 4-second clip.
